Re: GM talks dirty about Toyota

In this media bias that is always talked about (I do see it also), is there any relationship to the level of severity of the recall versus the publicity? i.e. Ford trucks catch on fire and burn down peoples homes, versus a small non-safety related recall? Maybe not, but worth looking into.

I'd rather see GM talk about thier reduction in recalls and increase in quality rather than "the other guys" increase in recalls and decrease in quality. They are seeing the leveling of the playing field the wrong way.

People will buy based on thier own experiences. If I hadn't had my last bad experience, I'd still be just as brand loyal as all of you, but there are reasons for peoples choices, that go way beyond perception.

Its either politics or Z/28 vs SS. Around here, the former usually stirs up less emotion.

But this is a neverending race... so GM needs to continue to focus on what's ahead.

GM, as a whole, has still not come close to exceeding Toyota, as a whole, in terms of long term durability and quality. 90 day initial defects or what not, maybe... I dunno... I don't care about my first 90 days nearly as much as how long it takes a car to wear out over the long term.

you know, I didn't get past page one of this thread.........

"GM talks dirty about Toyota"

Ha! This "dirty" equals realistic. Now is the time to capitalize on GM's constant quality versus Toyota's, as well as many others, quality perception despite the lack thereof.

I honestly have a hard time believing the numbers I see from JD Power - and don't tell me that's just because I don't want to believe them. They've ranked Lexus as #1 in 90 day, mid-term, and long term quality for 11+ straight years now and Lexus has only been around for 16 or so. But, IMO, any company that claims the old body style Malibu was a 5 out of 5 star in every measure of quality and dependability is smoking crack. If you don't believe me just go read one of the hundreds of owner reviews on carreview.com for their old bodystyle Malibus. It was bar-none the WORST owner-ranked vehicle on their entire database... that's out of several hundred sedans, Malibu was ranked dead last by its owners for a myriad of issues that dealers couldn't seem to figure out. Yet magically JD Power found it to be the absolute highest quality mid or low priced 4-door sedan made, period!

That's only 3 year quality, which Toyota is still comfortably ahead overall if you want to do the time to do the math based on volume and such.

I can't find any complete compilation of their truely long term studies (which I think is based on 7-8 year old cars), but I'd suspect the gap only widens further. Show me the numbers.

Now you did it...

Not only is Kyle good at expressing his opinions and expressing them often...he's also about as numbers-friendly kind of guy you can meet. You called him out to show you #'s... He'll probably come up with a theorem for precisely gauging long term quality, durability, and dependability for you.

Well in case you don't want to do the math by volume on the 2005 survey since they don't "group" the car companies into their respective HQ brands, the 2004 survey does:

Good enough?

Again, that's for 3-year.

Personally I'd like to see the results on 7-10 years or so.

I wasn't gonna do it, but WTF! Since I know it a certain nuthugger! The bias is there, and it's been there for years, it's about time GM stepped up to the plate, they can't expect ANY of the autofags to do this stuff!

Perhaps you don't understand what a nut-hugger is.

Hint: it often involves the overuse of the icon and the lack of the ability to formulate ones own unique opinion, as well as the typical lack of ability to comprehend opinions too far outside those you have chosen as your own.
