Re: Chevy SS/Commodore VF Renderings

Probably because they're not sure how well it'll sell as a Chevy; I'd also imagine the uncertainty of the US/AUS exchange rates and the cost of shipping it over would be a big factor.

Re: Chevy SS/Commodore VF Renderings

I'd say shipping isn't that big of a deal since they already have boats coming over with Caprice PPVs on them.

The comments above from Reuss doesn't sound there is much chance of anything else coming over like the Ute as an ElCamino.

Re: Chevy SS/Commodore VF Renderings

Don't read too much into that. GM simply doesn't want to lose the rights to the name the way Ford did with "GT40" and very nearly did with "Cobra" almost 20 years ago. More recently is the legalities of Chrysler using the "Cuda" and "Barracuda" names again.

Sure, there is the potential of Nomad being used on a Commodore wagon and it's no secret on where an El Camino name would end up. But it's more on protecting historic names.

Ford has no Thunderbird currently in the pipeline, but they still own the automotive rights to the name.

Well that stinks. Why the heck not?
Colin, how do you mean "it's not a return of the G8"??

It's not a Pontiac, it doesn't have a split grille or a Pontiac spear. Most of the front and rear sheet metal is different and the interior is revised.

But it's still basically a Holden Commodore sedan (though with sheetmetal differences the VE/G8 never had), it's still has V8 power (this time, standard). It's still being promoted as a sports sedan.

Colin, don't take things someone says that you can plainly see for yourself and make your own measurement so literally.

It's not a replacement for the G8, it's an addition to the Chevrolet lineup which is true. Pontiac is dead and buried.

But it is a car based on the same premise. But unlike the G8 which was made in both a base V6 as well as a V8 and a GXP, the Chevrolet SS is going to be made in one flavor.... much like the GTO.

At least for now.

No danger of me doing that - I have been stung too many times on this subject already.

But it is an open door.

Its a photoshop using Jimmie Johnson's paint scheme for the 2013 NASCAR season. Talk about unoriginal.

That looks about what I'd expect the "SS" to look like.

Re: Chevy SS/Commodore VF Renderings

Just wanted to throw a few facts/reminders for those few who still think the Chevrolet SS name is simply a placeholder.

There is the forementioned Chevrolet SS exported by Holden.

There was also the Chevrolet SS Concept from about a decade ago that many here...including myself... thought was a design preview of the next Camaro (it was actually a creative and exaggerated version of an early design for the then next Impala).

Then there was the Zeta based coupes. Pontiac's version was to be called GTO. Chevrolet's version was to be called the Chevrolet SS (the sedans would have been the Grand Prix and the Impala).

Pontiac's G8 ended up the defacto next gen GTO when GM decided against a new Monaro, while the planned Chevrolet SS coupe became the late arriving (by 5 years) SS sedan.

Motor Trend is reporting that the SS will have a 8-speed transmission.

Re: Chevy SS/Commodore VF Renderings

In that case they might as well throw the C7's 7 speed manual in there.

If the SS gets an 8-speed automatic AND the new LT1, I just may have to buy one.
