All the horsepower in the world, will not perfume an overweight pig...
Re: All the horsepower in the world, will not perfume an overweight pig...
That thing is heavier than my Z71 Colorado
This just makes the Vette look like that much better of a deal. If you need back seats, you can get a used LS2 CTS-V for the same money and seat 5, or get a Lingenfelter supercharged LS2 GTO for a few thousand less and it will be faster and lighter.

I would suggest you all read the july motor trend.A much better article and peformance tests that were backed up by a few different drivers.4.5 0-60 and 12.7@116.when comparing the GT500 to a GTO and charger SRT8 they said regarding acceleration "But neither figure(0-60 and quarter) conveys the relentless urge of that supercharged 5.4 liter V-8 when you nail the gas.The GT500 is a full half second faster than either car from 45 to 60mph and more than 2 seconds quicker to 100mph.its fast". nuff said.
Oh and by the way, heavy sucks, but it seems like a trend these days.Ferrari 599GTB=3750lbs, jaguar XK=3756lbs, Lamborghini Murielago=3850lbs

Funny how all the guys that ragged on the GTO for being such a pig are now suddenly okay with a 3,900 pound Mustang. Guess it all depends on your particular perspective.

GTO was among the first cars to approach heavier weights, and with only 350 HP it was lacking in the performance department. Now that everyone is getting more accustomed to 3900 - 4100 lbs weight, things aren't as bad as they were with GTO.

Tends to work at different rates in different people.I should've said "most", you're right.

Car & Driver tests the GT500 to 12.9 @ 112.
They put it up against a base 2006 Corvette which runs 12.8 @ 113.
(FWIW, the Corvette also beats the GT500 in braking, handling, 2-mile road course, and gas mileage.)

Even with those HUGE brakes, it still stops in an average 122 ft. That weight is killing it's braking performance.
Also, who the heck chose those gear ratios, or final gear?
They are terrible. 3rd gear going all the way up to 112mph? Why didn't they put in a 3.73 rear end and a 0.5:1 overdrive gear, or at least better gears for the 3.31 rear end? The car could have much better acceleration and the same/better highway milage. Seems as though they have a very strange setup there.
BTW, for that trap speed, the GT500 will easily be in the mid 12's with a decent/good driver.

(wild guess right here). I would bet that maybe one or two thousand of the drivers of the cars would be able to get past a 13.5. The vast majority of people do not power shift, nor do they know how to drive. I do not power shift and I do not launch all that hard since I do not want to brake my car. That is the *vast* majority of the people. The slim majority, the ones that even drag race their car, drive it well and hard enough to do that well.
"Plenty of guys" literally means maybe 200 for this car. Spend some time at a drag strip. I spend my time at two of the fastest (Atco and Englishtown) and there are so many terrible times for cars, it puts this all in perspective. FWIW, there is no definitive way to prove either your perspective or mine. But I feel mine is more likely.

Typically the trap speeds are there for these cars, it all comes down to the driver. STIs are low 13 second cars, but you have to beat the hell out of them to get them there. Just because the driver chooses not to doesn't make the car any less fast.

FWIW, C&D said launching the car was easy, "thanks to the terrifically tractable engine that makes it easy to keep the tires hooked up. Moreover, the Shelby has a programmable shift light and audible chirp to free your eyes from monitoring the 6000-rpm redline on the tach." They also brought up the fact that a BMW M6 tested in the same issue, that weighs 12 pounds more and is rated at 500 hp ran a 12.4 @ 121mph (as opposed to the Shelby that ran a 12.8 @ 115mph). Something else I found interesting was the lap times around their 2 mile course, which they kinda downplayed. The Vette was 3 seconds quicker per lap... which doesn't sound like much. But with an average lap speed of 79.6 mph (per the sidebar specs), 3 seconds is 24 car lengths!
