Base list price of 41... Vettes start out at 43 MSRP and these days it's not hard to get 'em for 500 over invoice which amounts to about 39,500. Good luck getting any money off the Shelby anytime in the first couple of years.

So realistically the two cars are priced pretty much in line with each other with the Vette offering much better performance all around, more feature content, etc.

I see no reason to go with the Shelby given its current specs unless you just really love the styling or really want the back seats.

Test notes-"Lots of mass to swing around....but its a little too heavy for its own good"

God I hope they dont have anything like that to say when the Z28 comes out! And there better not be a gas guzzler tax on our whip! ESPECIALLY a $3000 dollar one

20mpg on the highway... Technology sure hasn't caught up with Ford yet. If that price is getting up there close to 50k loaded, and thats just a coupe, the vert is going to be even more. It will run in the mid 12's though, just give it to more magazines and drivers, but I doubt it will be much faster than the previous generation even at its best.

I was reading that article today. Only trapping 112mph with 500hp is sad. Nothign performance wise about that car stands out to make it special. The old Cobra was a much better value.

I see the 5th gen surpassing this car performance wise pretty easily.

Re: All the horsepower in the world, will not perfume an overweight pig...

As an FYI....R&T's 03/04 Cobra test cars went 107 & 108 mph in the 1/4. This one went 112.

CAVEAT: Will wait for real-world testing to make my judgement on how the car really runs.

Still, I concur that the thing is way too heavy for its own good. It won't stop people from buying them, and it won't stop drag racers from modifying them to be stupid fast, but I've decided that I wouldn't want one - even at MSRP or lower.

The man has a point. Wait until the real drivers get them in their hands, and see what kind of numbers they can pull out of them. More than a few magazine test didn't exactly flatter the LS1 fbodies that much in terms of accuracy of speed capability.

I have known quite a few people that have gotten a bone stock fbody to run 13.5. I would also bet the GT500 is going to have plenty of guys that can run it faster than 12.9 stock. The power-to-weight ratio is there, and the car has the benefit of launching from a live axle, as opposed to a finnick IRS.

Re: All the horsepower in the world, will not perfume an overweight pig...

Before the car came out, and based purely on the speculated power, my guess was the GT500 would average ~5 tenths and 5 mph quicker/faster than a 03/04 Cobra.

I think it will be close to that - though I didn't count on it being quite as porky as it is. Oh well.

Wasn't someone able to get a 12.4 or so in a stock cobra? So you were guessing 11.9?

Re: All the horsepower in the world, will not perfume an overweight pig...

I was expecting a lot more from that car but the biggest surprise for me is the price...........as tested at 47K! What is that? What happened to mid to upper 30's? 47k is right in Vette territory. It doesn't really matter though, the "Mustang rule" applies here and that is that Mustang fans will pay ANYTHING for thier Mustangs no matter if it is "worth it" or not. Gas milage is horrible too but I'm sure few will care.

Re: All the horsepower in the world, will not perfume an overweight pig...

I just got my Car & Driver issue in the mail yesterday (the subscription was a gift... the magazine is pretty terrible.. but I like the pictures. )

Anyway, they put a GT500 vs a LS2 Corvette.

They came away saying little bad about the Corvette except they hate the seats... they also mentioned that the 2 to 3 shift was difficult.

They had a decent amount of issues with the GT500... most of it with the weight, and the terrible distribution of that weight...the car is pretty front-heavy...... and it also displayed some considerable understeer.

Yes, 12.4 is the quickest I have heard of, so a little math would take you down to the 11.9 range.
