I have to agree...

But if for some reason they did produce something in that price range with that much power (or more) ......

I do tend to believe a lot of the upcoming Cobra rumors. My reason, when the 03 Cobra "Terminator" rumors started flying around there were a lot of nay sayers. But the rumors were mostly true. My Guess is a 3v twin screw 5.4 with around 500 hp and a axle option for around 38-40k.

- C6 starts at about the same price as a Cobra will.
- The Camaro will be out shortly after the Cobra with an LS2
- '07 GTO is all new, 6.2L version might be coming. If not a Lingenfelter S/C GTO will cost the same as the Cobra.

with the 07 gto and the 6.2 coming
is there a chance for all these engines
3.9 v6 base, 5.3, 6.0, AND 6.2?
i think i'm just wishfully thinking but that would be pretty freaking sweet to have all those available, sort of a throwback to the first gens

If any of those engines are going away I would say it is the 5.3. The 6.0 should see DOD in trucks soon with the 6.2/6.3 (I have seen both) taking its place as the top dog. I would also think the 6.0 could get the same gas mileage with the DOD being a little more aggressive and you would get more power to boot, more power down low = lower last gear and better gas mileage (see 4.6 SOHC 5 speed vs LS1 6 speed).

Now, if the LS2 is actually a 420hp engine, that means over the next 2-3 years it'll go up those 20hp in "factory rating", allowing it to grow each year slightly and keep on top of the ball game. By 2007 or 2008 I bet the rating will be at 430-440hp.

From the looks of what a C6 runs at the drag strip, it's overrated. It appears to be short good 25 HP if you look at the times ran by C5 Z06.

Could the difference in time be gearing by any chance?

<---knows very little about racing

is definately the difference in gearing
the z06 has special tranny gears (and a 6spd if you're comparing to an auto) that are designed to give the fastest acceleration
that's also the case with the new one, since it has some that only let it get to somewhere over 190

Well that depends on where they do target this car price wise.
If it's high 30s low 40s then yes GM will plenty to compete with it.
If it's low to mid 30s AND the power rumors are right rated at 465(and sandbagged like the 03-04)...Gotta say no. A Lingenfelter GTO might be as fast and as powerful but it's going to be more expensive.
Eh a bunch of hemming and hawing over a lot of maybes. We should just wait until March to find out.

No one will know anything for sure until Ford officially announces it next month. However, they are commited to keeping the price on the new models pretty much the same as the last gen. MANY people said that Ford would never be able to price the 05 Mustang GT at $25K with all the improvements and the increase in hp, but look what happened. The price on the new Cobra should also remain close to the same and sell for around $35K It will be around 500 hp and should have no problem out-running a C6 and keeping up with the new Z06. Then of course with that magical little chip, pulley, exhaust and gears trick as with the last gen Cobras, there really isnt any car that will keep up with it short of a supercar

You do realize that a 5.4 Crate engine sells for 40K by itself right? So how would a Mustang Cobra with that engine go for 40K. The car would be more like 60K easy.

3 valve heads instead of 4, 2 cams instead of 4, Iron-block instead of aluminum, conventional oiling system instead of dry-sump, and so on. Yeah, the 550hp GT engine is basically 40k (MSRP anyways, sure it costs Ford a lot less to make), but the Lightnings basically 400hp 5.4 (underrated at 380) is a 5k engine. So a cheaper version of the GT engine making something north of or around 450+ hp is a possibility without the extra price tag.

As mentioned above, the 5.4 crate engine from the GT is likely not what is going into the Cobra. The $40k price tag is obvisously way, way, way too steep, but the GT motor does have some interesting features, and is an extraordinarily-strong block. Here are some pics of a GT block:

The word "beefy" doesn't do that thing justice.
