Writing a cam paper

Ok, we actually get to choose what we can write about in this class so this is what I chose, How to choose the right cam. I like numbers so I know SOME stuff about cams but need to ask a question or 437. Why does increasing the size of the engine make a cam less aggressive? Is lobe separation angle the angle between the peaks of the intake and exhaust lobe and how do you determine how much overlap you have, got any cam cards someone could explain to me? Does lsa, say 112 compared to 114, effect power or is it the overlap which most people assume is more in any 112lsa cam over the 114 lsa cam and how does this effect the torque curve? I noticed on comp cams catalog that they have tappet lift at TDC for 106 and 110 degrees...what the heck does that mean? Is choosing a cam for smaller (import) or larger (bigblock) than the general small block chevy any different? Would a carburated car need a different cam than an EFI car? Does lift and ramp rates effect gas milage as much as duration? How do you match a cam to your heads? How different are diesel cams? Now for some questions out of curiosity... how do the 3100 series lobes from comp cams compare to a solid roller cam? Are the cam lobes symmetrical, as in from the peak of the lobe if you were to cut it in half is it the same on both sides.... seems to me you would want it to linger at high lift a little after the peak of the cam if the cam were to open say the intake valve as the piston was TDC and close it at BDC since the piston is moving fastest at the cams peak lift (if it was symmetrical) and the flow of air doesnt react instantly so it would rush in momentarily after the piston was halfway down the cylinder right... is that what retarding and advancing cam timing is and how do both effect power generally? May come up with more questions as I go along but this should be too many for now

As for all the questions i don't want carpal tunnel so i'm not going to answer them but i will give you an aspect of engines and cam selection that you probably have no idea about. This will help you to understand about advancing and retarding a cam tho

This probably confused you more. and i hope this is a term paper because some of us could write volumes most of the stuff you're talking about. I would have picked something simpler to write about if i was you, but good luck with your paper anyway

So wait are you writing it now on a different post or something?? Its kind of an excuse to learn some more stuff about cams and I also dont really get interested in school that often so I figure Ill take advantage of it. Its not a term paper but worth a good chunk of my grade none the less and I need a good grade to get me going... its been a while.

Dont worry I found the isky link myself, tech articles.... so I guess if the intake and exhaust are free flowing or are proportional in flow you can use the same lobes for the intake and exhaust and it will make more lowend, dont get exactly why ill have to re read it a few times.

Try this link to Comp Cams catalog. Read pages 7, 8 and 9. under 'Valve Timing Infomation'. That's a first step.

http://www.compcams.com/catalog/

I suggest using the PDF version at the top of the page.

IMO, you subject is WAY too broad. It's at least a thesis topic. Now if your teacher is not a gearhead, and wouldn't know a camshaft from a crankshaft, you can just hit the highpoints, being very general and write a lot of BS. If he/she is a gearhead you are in deep doo-doo, man. You wouldn't want me as your teacher.

Is it too late to narrow the subject down to something simpler, like what a camshaft actually does in an engine? You might have a chance there.

When you do your paper, use a spell checker and a grammar checker. It will help your grade a lot.

For example: ide, im, Ide, cus, Im.

Sometimes on a forum more folks read your posts than read your term papers. I'm not a teacher, but bad spelling and grammar sucks.

So asking advice on a forum doesn't count?
That's sort of insulting to the folks who are trying to help you.

Emoticons are fine. Sometimes they might be appropriate in a term paper....well probably not with most teachers.

Have a good life.
