Going from carb to fuel injected questions
Going from carb to fuel injected questions
Not sure where to post this, but my gf's dad is looking at a 1967 mustang. He wanted to know how much it would cost to convert it from a 4-barrel carb to fuel injected? The guy said it's a 302 bored to a 351 (not positive on that, this is second hand info).
Not sure why, gas mileage most likely.
thanks for any replies.

Ford 351 Windsor engines are tall deck versions of the smaller small blocks (302, 289…), so they require a different intake manifold….
If you want to use factory parts, there are a few options, but the most popular are using the SFI intake used on the full size trucks and some full size cars _look_ like the 5.0 intakes, but they’re actually larger 351 intakes. There is also a factory CFI setup that works well, but is better suited for low rpm applications.
There’s plenty of aftermarket support for FI 351W’s since they were used in the early lightnings and are a fairly common mustang swap.
If it’s a 351 Cleveland or M… well then you’ve got a whole different problem. With the C, you’ll get stuck building something yourself (I don’t know of any ready made intakes out there) but it’s not that hard to drill one of spider style (single plane) intakes for injectors and adapt them to a TB. If it’s an M, most of the C parts will work (similar layout) but because of various other issues it’s not worth modifying.

IF you could raise the average fuel economy from 15 to 20 mpg, it would take about 70,000 miles to payback the $2200.
I like Rich's conversion also, but figure a couple of Cs to get it installed.
How about just changing the carburetor to something like Edelbrock's Thunder Series easily adjustable carb, or even a reconditioned Performer carb. A good carb guy could select the proper carb, linkage, etc, and set it up.
My $.02
And yet there is another option for you.... Venturi Fuel Injection or VFI. Check with Barry Grant: http://www.bgfuel.com/bgfuel/63.aspx

You guys are great. Thanks for the help. he doesn't want to fool with the Holley carb that's on there now and once he heard how much switching to a FI system was, he decided not to get that car. Now he's looking at Supras
maybe if he gets one I'll get to drive it!
thanks again!
