Cam/Timing question

1. What does a longer duration/lift cam do differently than the stock grind? (let a larger volume of air in basically?)
2. Why do we add timing on the low end when tuning for a long dur/lift cam?
TIA

Without getting too technical, yes. The valves are open longer/more allowing more air/fuel into the cylinders.

Okay, so we have more air/fuel coming in.

With a longer duration will the engine also suffer a loss in manifold vacuum?(at lower rpm, idle)
That's what I understand to happen. If that is the case, how does increasing the spark timing raise the rpm ? I know it does because I've seen it happen. I just wonder how it does it!

Thanks for the response
