what i mean is that if you wanted to swithc a cable driven speedo for an electric speedo (at least in the 700--i cant see why any other trannies would be much different) you just pop out the cable driven aperatus and plug in the electric one or vice-versa.

lol this post makes no sense.
I'm saying can I take out the stock mechanical spedo, and put an electrical spedo in the *stock* location (so it looks natural/stock..) w/out hassle?

Re: Tranny possibilities

i would have to say yes since i had to when my tranny was replaced with an older model 700 but mind you my experiance is with an auto tranny but like i said before i cant see how it would be much different.

Re: Tranny possibilities

So is an LS1/LT1 tranny a DIRECT bolt-in? Which is more reliable and can hold more power?

now youre just asking the same questions again. The LT1 is a direct bolt in as much as anything is a direct bolt in. You have to remove everything from your t-5 and all of the LT1 stuff will bolt in place of it.

and dude search tgo, ill grab you the gearing and strength differences for the lt1 t-56 in a second

Re: Tranny possibilities

^lol, sorry for repeating myself contually, but I want to make sure this is all fully sunk into my brain
Why is the gearing different and better in the LT1 than the LS1?

Re: Tranny possibilities

oops i thought i posted this afterwards
here is the difference in the LT1 trannys from the different years

Ratios and such:

trans............1st....2nd.....3rd.....4th....5th .....6th.....R.....TQ rating

'93 M28........3.36...2.07...1.35...1.00...0.80...0.62 ...3.28.....350ftlb
'93 M29........2.97...2.07...1.43...1.00...0.80...0.62 ...3.28.....400ftlb
'94-'97 MN6...2.66...1.78...1.30...1.00...0.74...0.50...3. 28.....450ftlb

stop saying ls1! I dont know if the gears in the ls1 are better or different or what but it does not matter. An LS1 t-56 will NOT bolt up to your enginge.
The differences i was speaking about are in the different years of the LT1 t-56 as you see above.

Re: Tranny possibilities

Ya, thank you for clarifying the fact that the ls1 wont bolt up, lol.
Is a .50 overdrive ratio good or what? Is it true that both 5th gear and 6th gear are overdrives?
I guess I will be looking for a '94 and up Tranny, as that is the safest way to go both gearing and power wise.
Thank you SO much for having patience with me

Re: Tranny possibilities

all of those are ratios so 2.66 is 2.66:1 or 1.78 is 1.78:1

Anything that is lower numerically then 1:1 is OD

ya you want the 94-97 trannies

Re: Tranny possibilities

^So would you actually use 5th gear for racing??
What about fourth gear; that is 1.00, so does that equate 1:1?

I dont get some of your questions. 5th gear for racing? you would use 5th gear when ever you ran out of 4th gear.

OD is smaller numerically (taller physically) then 1:1 so 4th is not OD, 5th and 6th are OD

Re: Tranny possibilities

Looks like your starting to get things figured out. Lot of crap was suggested in this thread though.

The newer "electronic" speedos (90-92 'maros) won't just swap in. If it did, it'd be the whole guage cluster. Your DS and torque arm can be reused if you use the lt1 t56. Just try and get everything you can from the donor car; hydraulics, slave, flywheel, bellhousing, etc.

I found an lt1 t56 for cheap without all the other stuff and it was a pain in the *** to assemble everything together. I used the weir bellhousing but it makes replacing/maintenance parts hard to find.

Re: Tranny possibilities

as far as replacing the cluster he was wondering if he could just stick and autometer speedo in his stock cluster. Do the stock gauges just pop out?

Lol, what I meant was "Will 5th gear be too steep/power less for racing?".

iansane- Yes, I am getting things figured out indeed This is gonna be a pain in the a$$, but Hey, gotta do it right? BTW.. will the master-cylinder from the 94+ LT1 work in my car, or no?

Doug- You are correct; all I want to do is swap out my mechanical spedo for an electrical spedo, so I can maintain a stock-look on my dash Will that be possible? Doesn't a electrical spedo just plug right into the tranny?
