how to get a rusted out brake bleeder screw out?
so i tried to get this bleeder screw out on my brothers TA, and the thing is rusted in there, and my dads mechanic stripped the crap out of the thing. i put vise grips on, and they just slip off. i tried pounding on a socket, it just slips off too. this screw is horribly mangled. does anyone have any ideas on how to get it off? we were thinking of getting a screw extractor, the kind you drill down into the screw and then screw the extractor in, it has opposite threads i think, then you just screw it out. would that work? or if that fails, could i just drill down the whole screw and then put new threads in the caliper with a tap and die? or do you have any other ideas? thanks a lot guys, this is probably a dumb question lol
the thing ur talkin about w/ the opposite threads is called an easy-out. its hard to picture in my head how bad its screwed up but i imagin u could try it and if that doesnt work, buy a new caliper b/c they come w/ bleader screws w/ them. is it front disk or rear? if its a front disk,it shouldnt be too expensive, but i think the rear ones are a little more $$$
hope this helps

yeah, we ended up borrowing an easy out from our neighbor, and the durn thing was stuck in so bad we broke the thing, the guy said it was made out of hardened steel lol. so we did end up buyin a new caliper. when you go to put the caliper back on, do you have to line up the hole on the side of the bolt with the hole in the line, and if so, how? also, is it as simple as unbolting the flexible line to get it off? it has a few tears in it so we figured wed just replace it while we had everything apart. thanks again
You don't have to worry about lining up the hole in the bolt. The bolt shaft is necked down enough for the fluid to flow around it. And yes, changing the line is a simple as unbolting it and bolting the new one on. It's a good idea to go ahead and change it since you have the caliper off anyway.
sweet deal. we got everything back together and bled the brakes. i only bled the front two because i had already done the back two a few weeks ago. you still have to press down quite a bit to get firmness in the pedal, but it seems improved. could there still be air in the line or could it be something else?
What year is your brother's car? If it has the pre-'89 disc rear brakes, they're a real pain to get adjusted right. If it's a drum rear you can try adjusting the shoes out....it may help. And it's always possible that there's more air in the lines.
