how to disable fuel pump
how to disable fuel pump
I have an origional tpi 86 camaro and it will be getting a carbed 350 in it. I'm to the point of installing the new engine and want to disable the fuel pump. I was looking at a haynes wiring diagram and see that a tan wire runs to the fuel pump. When I'm under the car I can see a harness coming out from on top of the tank and running into the car above the rear. The wires (really dirty so kinda hard to tell) are black, pink, and tan with a white tracer. From the diagrams it seems the pink goes to the gauge. Even though it's listed as just tan is that tan/white one the pump one? Can't seem to find the relay either cause the wires aren't matching up with the haynes. Fuse box isn't labled
I'm also removing the PCM. Would this alone be enough to not make the pump run? Any other ideas?

Re: how to disable fuel pump
I should have added without dropping the tank or without spending any $$. I know there are like 10 things to cut or remove and each make the pump not run. It's just nothing is matching up with my haynes diagrams. I did this on an 85 el camino but it was years ago and I forget what I did.
Re: how to disable fuel pump
I'd regulate the electric pump to 6psi for a carb,
a mechanical fuel pump will not be able to pickup fuel thruogh the electric pump,
so you'll have to change the tank or pick up assembly
the fuel pump fuse is under the hood by the battery on newer tpi can't say I've had any experience with your paticular year

Re: how to disable fuel pump
the fuel pump relay is located on the driver side firewall in between the brake booster and the fender, the illustration i have shows 3 similar relays in the same spot, now providing the relays have NOT switched spots it should be the center one, but this alone will NOT disable the fuel pump because ( i know this sounds weird and i dont believe it myself but i think i will try it) but these cars are equipped with a back up for the fuel system. "should the fuel pump relay fail the oil pressure switch at a +4psi will energize the fuel pump circuit throught the ECM send power to and enabling the fuel pump to operate." this info is out of a GM 1988 camaro service manual but i wouldnt think things changed that much from 86-88.

Re: how to disable fuel pump
I remember when I did my el camino transplant (4.3 TBI to 350 carbed) I left the fuel pump in the tank and just used a mechanical. I ran the car like that for almost a year and then sold it. I saw the new owner months after that and he was still running it like that
I guess I will do the regulator. Since I'm going with such a pressure drop will I have to use the return style one? Also what's going to make the pump even work when I take out the PCM? Think it'll still work?
