Question 86' Firebird engine swap, 2.8 Ltr to 305 H.O.

My brother and I are working on an 86' Firebird, it had a 2.8 Ltr V6 in it, mated to a 700 R-4, we want to put a H.O. 305 in it and use the 700 R-4. My Questions are, first will the original fly wheel work in this setup? Second , what do we have to change to make this work? Plz. Help , any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

You will not be able to use the 2.8 transmission with the 305, it has a different housing. You will need a V8 transmission. As to what else you will need to change, it is basically everything from the radiator back to the driveshaft, along with the computer, tach and fuel pump. Thirdgen.org has numerous write-ups in detail on the swap.

I would go with a V8 700-R of the same period as your car. I believe your bird's speedometer is cable driven. Later years are VSS which would require changing out the dash pod. Not a bad job, but a cable driven would be an easier swap. I know Camaros have cable thru 1988.

If you are going carb, you would need to wire in the lock-up on the converter.
