The Z/28's benchmark should be.....
I'll say it again:
Corvette benchmarks (and exceeds) exotics costing more than twice as much.
Why can't Camaro benchmark performance coupes costing twice as much?
I do not mean benchmark in terms of price. I mean benchmark in terms of performance. It's already got the road presence....

So I guess everyone that doesn't gush over the BMW just don't get it? You sound like the typical BMW driver, maybe you should go buy a BMW instead of asking Chevy to build you one. They already build what your asking for and it's the Corvette as others have said. The Camaro can never be what your expecting it to be, not for the price they need to sell it at. Look at how much the M3 weighs even with all it's ultra expensive materials. The Camaro is going to be half the price, get real.
The Camaro at half the price? If you think the Z/28 is going to cost one half of an M3 you'll be sadly disappointed. The Z/28 will probably be 75-80% of the cost of an M3. Is that so far off that it shouldn't be compared? According to you, apparently. How about the 135, which probably costs less than what a Z/28 would cost? That car's got some great qualities to benchmark as well. Or does the Corvette cover that one too?
Okay, forget all of these Bimmers. Is the $18K Mini Cooper too expensive? Because that cheap little car, has many of the intangibles, like "feel", which I'd hope the Camaro has as well.
"Get real"?

when someone mention's a "benchmark" i automatically assume numbers.. which is why i brought those up..
sounds to me that you like the feel of the way the car handles.. thats a different story..
i think the LS3 Camaro will be very close in handling numbers to the M3.. but will it have the feel of driving a BMW? i seriously doubt it
on the price of the Z/28... 75-80% of the M3? that's $47,250-$50,400.. i dont believe that for one second its gonna cost that much

How do you figure that? The M3 starts at $56K. Whatever the Z/28 costs, it certainly won't be half of that.

75% of $56K is $42K.
80% is $44,800.
I think $42K is too much for a Z/28, unless it's fully loaded. I pray to God it comes in less than that.
Your post shows me that you absolutely DO NOT get it. Sorry. The Corvette is phenominal - but to say that it's Chevy's BMW, confirms to me that you just don't get what I'm getting at. Do you think -BTW- that the Corvette didn't benchmark Porsche and Ferrari? Does the Z06 compete with far more expensive cars -and beat them?

2008 BMW M3
Base price $63,000 (est)
I don't think I have ever heard anyone cross shop a Camaro and a M3. The Camaro is not meant to be or feel like a BMW, it doesn't compete with any BMW's. Camaro's competition is Mustangs, Challengers, Chargers, etc... The mini Cooper has that same feel because they are owned by BMW and it suppose to be a sporty ride, it's also the tiniest little mousetrap I've ever seen and you couldn't force me to get into one of those little things. They are also excessively overpriced for what you get but that's the BMW way. Hell dude I use to work at the BMW plant, I've been in and driven them all up until a few years back. Their not all their cracked up to be, nice cars but the cost to build doesn't justify the price. Heck there are more BMW's around here than Toyota's.
In most of the reviews/test-drives I've been reading, the G8 is being compared to BMWs right? Maybe not being said to be as good, but damn near close....
I don't understand why we're worrying about this.

Charlie:

You've got to be kidding............the M3 (and correct me if I'm wrong--) starts out at $56,000 ---
If we even for one second considered a Camaro at $45,000 -- we'd be crucified...........
I understand 'benchmarking' -- but I think we both know that we have to bring the Camaro in at an affordable price.
John Heinricy is very much involved in the new car -- I think you'll be plesantly surprised..........

It really doesn't make any sense for the Camaro to be benchmark to the M3. What’s everyone been waiting on for the past 2 years is the Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang matchup. M3 is in another class. If GM going to Benchmark the BMW it probably will be in there Cadillac line such as the CTS-V. On the other hand, G8 design has been inspired by BMW, but that is far as that goes. I believe if you want a BMW like performance then you should get a BMW.
Scott, I think that Charlie's ideas of making the car have the steering feel and feedback of one of the most successful and constant performing coupes ever to hit the streets the benchmark for Camaro is an AWESOME idea.
