NEWS: GM Reportedly Calls "Game On" For Supercharged 550HP Camaro Z/28
According to the article it started at $20k and they lowered it to $9k after complaints.
Heck its a Z/28 not a Shelby. Why not a fiberglass hood like they did on the 4th gens?
Although I wonder how much lighter either (fiberglass/carbon fiber) would be compared to the stock aluminum hood. (Yes, I know they'd be lighter... how much lighter is the question.)
According to the Hot Rod article, the GMPP shorty headers save 9lbs. I was also surprised how much the engine cover weighs.

when i put long tube headers on, i was shocked how much heavier the stock manifole with cats felt, compared to the long tube withoutthe cats. the exhaust is heavy also. i probably lost 20-25lbs from my car so far.

Man this BS is still going on? Complain all you want, Chevy is going to build the car the way they want and if you don't want it don't buy it. I swear if I was GM product planning and read this thread I would say screw it and cancel the whole program, and let them live with what they have so far. 99% of the people buying these cars don't race them around a track, and the person who said they could delete 6 airbags, do you honestly think a major corporation trying to promote safety is going to pull a safety device out of a car and make it less safe? Let's get realistic with our hopes for this car. 200lb's isn't coming off of this car, safety equipment isn't coming off this car, and a racing suspension for 1% of owners most likely isn't gonna make it on this car. Can we just have the complaint thread started elsewhere and get back to just news about the Z28? Oh yeah it's gonna be called the Z28 also so get over that fact as well!
Unless they go the Cobra R route with the z28 and pretty much market the car as a hardcore track-car with most of the equipment stripped out, all of the original safety equipment should remain. I think most of us would prefer it remain a street car that can be occasionally raced instead of a race-car that can be occasionally driven on the street. Safety isn't an area that should be compromised imo.
Wonder if Ford will do a Cobra R again???

i saw this company making a carbon fiber bumblebee style hood. this hood saved about 12-15 lbs off of the car.

Since the Camaro team has gone with the aluminum hood, I would say that GM are being reasonably weight conscious with this car (note: G8 has a steel hood). Other weight savings would almost cost an arm and leg... and if customers are queuing up for a $+50K Camaro stripper model, then GM must be totally ignoring this crowd.
Having said that, I wonder how much weight savings would be achieved if the Camaro's doors and trunk lid were also made from aluminum, not to mention some suspension components?
EDIT: Btw, I found this link on the number of aluminum parts used in some vehicles sold in Japan. What's interesting is the cars that use aluminum parts extensively aren't exactly light. But the most relevant car I thought was the RX-8 as I know it uses aluminum for quite a few of its panels.

NOT a Ford part at all.

It wasnt a Super Snake it was just a GT500KR that hit a deer .
I've been holding off buying an SS with the hope that something very much like this Z28 would come out. And now it looks like my hopes will be fulfilled. Maybe you racers don't like it, but I bet there are more potential customers out there like me than there are like you.
Somehow I doubt it, they have the various FR500 cars, which more or less replaced the R models with actual full on track cars.
It'd be nice to see GM do the same with the F5 and offer a host of track cars you could buy straight from GM to race with.

You couldnt be more wrong. GM is listening and they will fix the car to make it better, I guess we could just be a big pushover like you and accept what we are given and say nothing about so nothing will ever change. Yeh that will work well. A lighter car is also in GM's best interest because of fuel mileage. And learn how to read I said to eliminate 4 of the 6 airbags because that is what is required by law, unless it has changed to 4, and wouldnt cost GM a dime, actually I think the car would be cheaper.
Agreed. I tried to get a number about 15 pages back of how many people who don't like the current set up would buy one if their major hang up was fixed, and only 1 guy came forward and said he would. A few others complained about my choice of words in the question, which kind of makes me think that some people just like to complain
.
They may not like the fact that it's not the optimal set up for their interests, and I think thats mostly in the name. The hard core traditionalists view the Z28 as it was in the first gen, but this Z28 is a modern day SS396, no other way to look at it (and about as far from the original Z28 formula as you can get.)
What I don't think that they're really processing the fact that there are a lot of folks out there w/ cash in hand that would love the oportunity to buy a factory supercharged Camaro (the only time its ever happened, and also it's HIGHLY likely to be the most powerful Camaro that has ever been, or ever will be built). It doesn't have to be a volume mover, it just has to pay for itself and make GM a little PROFIT.
I'm of the opinion now that GM should offer the following...
V6 and SS stay the same
Z28 as an SS w/ a "track pack" or "Z51" or whatever you want to call a suspension/gearing/tire package
ZL1 as what the Z28 is planned to be.
