Good god guys get a grip!!!!
My '89 weighs around 3350 pounds. Heavy I guess, compared to the lightest5.0 Mustang - the LX sedan. I seem to remember a well optioned Celebrity weighed about the same as a 3rd gen and the Lumina was around 3500-3600 pounds. So it weighs less than a GM10. Waaaaaaaay less than a B-body Impala/Caprice though.

Couldn't resist.
I imagine the Camaro will have no problem with any of the "standard" Mustang variants, but I'll be the tuner companies will give them a rough time, albeit at a much higher cost.
Sigh... which Camaro? Or are you saying the current S-197 is crappier than the Fox/SN95/New Edge cars on the track compared to the 3rd & 4th gen F-cars?
I guess this Mustang owner I saw on the freeway must have pulled a ricer move. It had a sticker going down the side that said GT350 just like the GT500.
There are a lot of them out there right now, they are refered to in the Shelby community as "Tribute" cars, they aren't looked down on too much because as long as they're not cars that they have made in that body style (like putting Shelby GT stripes on a current regular GT)
Seriously, do you have any personal experience with any of these cars, or do you only know what you read on the net?
well, strictly speaking I doubt many people on this site (or in the world for that matter) know how well the new Camaro will do on a tight road course.
The SGT is a very nice handling car, but I've driven MUCH better.

Because you're the one going on about how this Camaro is not true to it's heritage due to its size. I don't buy it.
It it's 3350, you got a stripper model. Celebrities started under 3000, and the first Lumina was well under 3500.
See, the fact is that you wanted Camaro to be lighter than any other four seat car with similar power and IRS that meets 2010 market and legal requirements.
For a number of reasons that I won't rehash (unless you really want me to), it isn't. But it is competitive with other cars in its class.
You mentioned the G37 at one point. The R&T tested G37 curbed at 3750 pounds. Right there with the spec sheet for the Camaro LT (who knows what the magazines will weigh it at -- it depends on how well equipped the test cars are).
The fact is that this new Camaro is pretty true to its heritage. It's not a lightweight, tightly focussed track car like you wanted, but the Camaro never was. It came closest in the 4th gen, and we know how that turned out (hey, I like mine, and I'd buy a new one with that L99 and A6 in it
, but there aren't enough people like me, or like you, apparently).
Now maybe the 2011 Mustang will come through at 3450 pounds with IRS and a 400hp V8, and then I'll gracefully let you point to this post and send me my meal of crow. For my part, I think it will be more like 3600 and still have a live axle. And I predict it won't be as spacious (which I know you don't care about, but some will, and they may buy the Camaro over the Mustang because of it).

Thinking about this a bit....
It seems like the Chevelles you're referring to are the '65 to '72 models. I would argue that starting in 1973, the Camaro Z28 essentially supplanted the role of the Chevelle SS in the market. By that time, the Chevelle was over 4000 pounds, and a 4300 pound Chevelle SS with a 250hp 454 big block wasn't all that quick, and it gulped fuel.
The 1973-81 Camaro Z28 as tested by magazines (i.e. not stripped mfr's weight) weighed around 3600 - 3700 pounds, which is in the ballpark of the '65 to '72 Chevelle SS (later models a little higher, early models less).
If you map the 2010 Chevy lineup to 1969, I think you're right. The Camaro fills in for the Chevelle SS. The V6 is like the tame 396, and the SS would be like the solid lifter 396, or even a 427, had one been offered.
The Cobalt SS maps to the old Nova SS, and has to do double duty in the Camaro's spot. Of course, it's Wrong Wheel Drive. But most stuff is these days.....
So I got the name wrong jack @ss, most on this board knew what I was talking about. I assure you that I know a hell of lot more about these cars than you. How many Camaro's have you owned/raced or Mustangs for that matter. The 08 Shelby GT Mustang will run circles around the new Camaro. Go out to a local autox and see.

I don't even know if you are old enough to drive... in which case its a total waste of time giving you my time.
