Could this gain some Horses?

I was just thinking today, about ways to make some power on my engine w/o buying anything, and came up with this.If you took off Air, and took off AC, then got a smaller belt, could you gain some hp from parasitic loss? Also could you fab up some tranny lines to run through the condenser, and have it act as a massive tranny cooler? Just wondering

Nothing you mentioned is worth the trouble.

Re: Could this gain some Horses?

it is for me. Ac not working(compressor), Secondary Air system screwd up. Since I have ttops, and never use AC, and also is a lot cheaper to delete the 2, clean up the engine bay making future mods and maintanance easier, and also lose some weight, and gain a little hp, its definitely worth it to me. I just wanna know if you can use the condensor as a tranny cooler

You'll get a couple of ponies from a/c and air removal don't expect to feel a difference.

The air pump is electric driven on the 4th gens, not belt driven so it shouldn't effect you. As for the A/C, if you don't have the unit working, then it shouldn't cause you loss either, but if you remove it, it will take a decent amount of weight off your front end.

Re: Could this gain some Horses?

Generally a good idea to include basic data about your car - year, model, engine, tranny and any major mods - so people can give an accurate answer.

If its a 4th Gen, when you delete the A/C you can't shorten the belt. You need to install an idler pulley in place of the A/C compressor clutch. All you have deleted is a minor inertial load from the rotating portion of the clutch, which isn't much. As already noted above, the AIR pump is electric driven and doesn't even run past the first couple minutes after startup, so no savings there. Weight reduction is the only real gain on both items.

Using the condensor as a large tranny cooler would probably hurt more than it helps, since now the entire radiator is covered by the tranny cooler and the hot air out the back of the condensor is being used to cool the entire radiator surface, reducing its heat removal capability and forcing the fans to run more.

Re: Could this gain some Horses?

I think it has to do with the grooves on the pulleys. The PS & tensioner pulley, for example, has a smooth pulley for the backside of the belt, whereas the alternator, crank, and A/C have grooved pulleys for the ribs of the belt to fit into...

I'm guessing from his screen name that its a 94 4th Gen. With the LT1, there is no way to reroute the belt when you delete the A/C, at least not without custom brackets, relocating the alternator and/or PS pump. May be possible with an LS1 though.

lol... even with leather seats, you still end up with swampass... thats why I love the houndstooth seats... the look of leather, but the center of cloth.
