Need help with skinnies
Need help with skinnies
Let me start by saying I never had skinnies before, so These questions may be dumb. Id like to get a set of the weld pro stars for the front of my car. This car is used only for racing and car cruizes. I need input into what width rim would be right for me. I like the 3.5" look but Im wondering if they would be safe to drive on to and from the track, or to car cruizes? Or should I look into something wider? And is there a big difference in weight say between a 3.5" wheel and a 5" wheel? And If anyone has a pic of 5" wheels on there car and there offset, can you please post? By the way this is a high 12 second car, Im running the factory 5 spokes in front now, So I would like to end up with a lighter tire rim combo and hopefully better 60fts. Thanks
The 1.7 60ft was a one time fluke, 1.8 is the usual

Re: Need help with skinnies
The info on the sizes and Pro-Stars that I use, along with the need for a spacer and longer studs are fully described in the "Drag" FAQ "stickied" in the Wheels and Tires forum main page/topic listing.

The 3.5" wide Pro-Stars are visibly stamped on the outside of the wheel "For Drag Race Use Only". They are not designed for the high lateral loads encountered in daily driving. Neither is a true "front runner" or "skinny" tire designed for that use. I've driven mine to and from the track (7 miles) and to car shows with my drag setup on the car, but that's all I would even consider using them for on the street.

Re: Need help with skinnies
Thanks for the reply. Ive read the facts page. So is it a waste of time/money if I got the 15x6's?
I need new front wheels (ones bent) and tires, and wanted to get something lighter, but I want it to be safe.
Would there be a large weight diff between pro star 15x6s and factory firebird5 spokes?
I read the 5 spokes are 19pounds.

Re: Need help with skinnies
The factory wheels are closer to 25# I think. That is also covered in one of the FAQ posts by Brent Franker, and he has a list of weights on his website, which is linked in the FAQ.
My approach is two separate sets of wheels - Pro-Stars for the track and ZR1/GS replicas (17x9.5 / 17x11) for the street.

Re: Need help with skinnies
I have been looking at front tire options for the same reasons. Besides the 15x3.5's not being street legal, they also have limited tire options.
I started looking around and found the 15x5 1 piece Race Star's to be my best option. They use a shank style lug nut, and are made for brake clearance on Fbodys. This means you will not need a spacer or longer wheels studs. I personally think they look better than the Pro Stars to, with the thinner spokes.

Match those with a 205/70/15 radial and the overall tire/wheel combo is around 33 lbs. My 15x3.5 Drag Lites w/ MT Sportsman tires weighed about 28 pounds. So you aren't giving up a lot of weight, unless you ran a drag only front runner on the skinny.
I was looking at these tires to go on them -

Obviously you would not be able to corner/brake as if you were riding on the stock 245/50/16's, but the load rating for the tire is good for our cars and the tire is made for a 5" - 7" rim.
