? about using longer studs with 15x10 draglites or prostars
I am wanting to run some 15x10 (7.5 b.s.) draglites or prostars on my 95z. I know they would require some grinding, that is not a problem. My question concerns the need for longer wheel studs. I am not familiar with the current rules for passing tech (IHRA track), but if I remember right, the stud has to thread into the lug nut a distance equal to or greater than the diameter of the stud??? With the thickness of the Welds, this cannot be achieved, correct?
Ok, changing the studs is no big deal, but the car will be a street/strip car, running zr1's on the street. With the longer studs, will the plastic lug nut covers (individual screw on caps) still work? or will the studs be so long that the caps wont go on?
I know a lot of guys are running the 15x10 Welds, so what is everybody doing when in street trim?
thanks alot

The front wheels won't require grinding. They require a 5/16" spacer. That means you will need at least 2.67" stud. That just barely meets the "engagement in the hex portion of the lug by at least one stud diameter" that is used by NHRA. Appears IHRA may be similar. Lingenfelter (LPE) sells the studs in the correct knurl. Probelm is that in addition to the 2.67" of threads, they also have a 5/8" untreaded portion beyond the threads, which makes it just about impossible to put any stock style closed-end lug on it.
In the back, You will also need the longer studs, but the 2.67's are long enough to meet tech easilly when there's no spacer involved.
ARP and GM Performance Parts also sell studs with the correct knurl... not sure what length, or whether they also have the untreaded end that is supposed to help you mount the wheel on the stud with less difficulty.
I run 3" studs in the back, because they are 1/2-20 to thread into Strange axles. I had to get a "duplex acorn" lug, and it still hit the end of the stud. So I drilled the end of the lug and threaded it through from the inside, so that the ends of the studs just barely peek out of the end of the lug. Looks Ok buried deep in the 17x11 ZR1's. But in the front, I had to drill and tap the lugs that came with the AFS wheels, and the ends of the studs stick out at least an inch with the ZR1's. Looks bad. It would probably help to cut off most of the unthreaed end of the stud.

thanks Injuneer, I dont want the studs sticking way out when on the street, so maybe I need to look at the Telstars or Bogarts so I can use the stock studs.
My concern with the telstars is since they are only 8 inch wide wheels, can you get a big enough tire on there to give traction for 400-425 rwhp, 6 speed launching at 5k. I have a set of Hoosier 26x10x15 drags, but they wont fit a 8 inch wheel.
