285/40/ZR17 ok for 17x9 rim?

I did a search and read that with a 9 inch rim the maximum you can go is 275 and i couldnt find anymore info on it so i figured i would go ahead and ask this quick question. It is a pair of Nitto 55r drags 285/40/ZR17's on SS 17x9's. Is this the size that i want or does anybody have any other suggestions? Thanks. oh and right now it has bald 275/40/ZR17 street tire nittos, and its time for some traction!

Those are the size of my rear tires... the Same ones that hook hard enough in second gear to damn near push the nose up enough to knock me back in the damn seat. So yeah those are fine.

I run 285/40-17 BFG G-Force KDs on my 95 all around, and they are fine. No rubbing. They hook GOOD.

I've had my share of crummy tires but Nitto's will definantly be "OEM" gear on my car....

Are you talking about the Nitto Extreme Drag NT555R? I had those in 275s, I didn't realize they had 285s now?

I run 285 on a 17x9" rim in the back and it works fine.

You might want to tell Nitto about these..... they don't seem to list them on their website:

http://www.nittotire.com/tires_555r.asp

sounds like maybe a little bit of imaginary tires coupled with imaginary performance .....

Nothing imaginary here is a picture of them... I guess they stop producing them in that size. But I brought mine last summer; I'm sure they are still out there. When you have as many suspension and tranny upgrads as I do...nothing's imaginary. Between the Tranny and the Rear end I have over allot invested... and I'm not even done yet. My car hooks Extremely Well.

Matter of fact my last race was against a GenII mustang that had some of those ET slick things. He jumped off the tree before I did, and when I finally put my car in gear I ended up jumping a car ahead of him in seconds. These Nitto's are really good tires I put my faith in them 100%

All I can really say is from anything I ever learned through the years wether import or domestic... it's how you displace your tunning. I like my combo it works.
