275/50/16s safe on a 16x8 salad shooter?

Someone is selling a set of Hosier tires and he's saying it would fit on a 16x8 salad shooter. I searched the forum and many people say 255 is the biggest safe size for 16x8. Others are saying they run 275 fine. So now i'm confused. I would only run these tires when i go to the track.

You might be able to get them to fit, but it definitely won't be safe. Do not go larger than 255.

Depends.

Hoosier used to make "street" tires, and perhaps they made a 275/50-16. But they stopped making "street" tires, because of the legal issues with the D.O.T. ratings and the high cost of getting the tires certified.

They do make a 275/45-16 in their Sports Car D.O.T. Radial model. Hoosier says those tires will fit properly on wheels ranging in width from 8" - 10.5". The misconception that there is a "255 limit" for 8" wheels arises from the fact that there are no high performance "street" tires wider than 255 available for a 16" wheel. However the 275/45-16 Hoosier Sports Car DOT Radial (not a legal street tire) will fit fine on a 16x8" rim.

Note that a 275/50-16 will be more than an inch larger in diameter than the stock tire.

Might want to check out the Hoosier website to verify the above info.

Wow that last quote is scary... if it's going to give you a loss of traction, etc. etc... who the hell would use them for racing?

They're telling you that you might see a loss of traction on public roads - especially wet ones, no doubt. Drag racing tires really aren't well suited for street use. Among other things, the sidewall flex that they allow (better for launch traction) becomes a liability whenever you go around a corner.
