17x11 Rim questions

I came across a great deal on a pair of 17x11 rims for sale. While at the seller's home, I had the opportunity to take off my rear wheel and test fit the ZR-1 style rims for sale. The lip of the rim would make contact with the bumpstop bracket and it seemed that only an 1/2 inch of clearance would make all the difference in making the rim fit. My question is this: Could I use a thin wheel spacer to make the rims fit? Would this be okay or would it cause potential problems. The seller owned a ZR-1 Corvette, and the rims were specifically for that vehicle. It was strange that the rims did not have the offset stamped on the inside of the rim like others. Because of this I do not know what the offset is.

Odd results. The true ZR1 17x11 wheels have the 36.5mm offset, which results in a 7.40" backspace. That should provide ample clearance from the bump stop brackets, but will result in the tire being outside the fender.

The Grand Sport 17x11's have the 50mm offset, resulting in a 7.93" backspace, and that is the wheel that can catch the inside edge of the rim on the bumpstop bracket, when the body is jacked and the wheel drops. The tire will be just under the edge of the fender lip.

The solution does not require a spacer. It can be done with a little bit of hammering and cutting the projecting edge of the bump stop bracket off.

All this is explained in one of the posts in the Wheel and Tire FAQ's, "stickied" at the top of the forum topic listing.
