wont start...

im having this issue with my 90 bird v6 3.1. Sometimes when you go to start it nothing happens. Sometime times when the ignition is switch off and on serveral times you can hear a click that sounds like the starter but nothing happens or sometimes the car will start. The starter was just replaced less then a 30 days ago. Also when it does start half the time the car ends up stalling out, and sometimes the gauges on the dash will fluctuate, and the security light will light up.

I tried changing the battery, and i also have a few 8GA ground cables running from the bat to the body, bat to engine, engine to body. So gounding should be good. Also tried a spare key. Im gonna try bypass thing the VATS at the wiring under the column by installing a resistor to remove worn contacts in the ignition cylinder out.

Oh and the 791xv alarm has been removed from the car.

Re: wont start...

sounds like false contact on your battery terminals or to the terminal on the starter. most of your car is juiced off the starter terminal. if the starter clicks but stops then you can rule out the VATS.

Re: wont start...

if its something loose at the starter would that also cause the car to stall sometimes?

Re: wont start...

went under and found the problem, big'ol red cable @ starter was really loose. also cleaned the ground connection at the block had alot of grease buildup but she fires right up now.

now if i could only fix the problem thats been an issue for almost a year and thats it seems like it misses at idle. after the car warms up when you stop at a light the rpm's will slowly start to decrease and get to about 500-600 and then it will start to flucuate and sometimes seem like the car wants to die. Ive replaced the TPS/IAC, ignition module, cap, rotor, plugs and wires, timing set (because its got 160K miles and hasnt had it changed). Ive checked for vacuum leaks but havnet been able to locate any.

Re: wont start...

you should scan the sensors first to see what they are doing. I am leaning more towards the 02 sensor may be acting up or maybe the MAP sensor. check your sensor parameters with a scan tool.
