SES Light flashing and car runs like crap!

one of my girlfriends has a 97 camaro with like 55000 mi on it.
she left my drive way the other day and there was a small pop when she took off and after that it sounded like it had a bad missfire. when she came back it smelled like the cat was plugged or something. but would a bad cat make it seem like the car is misfiring?

luckily the car is still under warranty and will be fixed at a dealer at their cost but i'd still like to have an idea of what it could be so they don't rip her off.
thanks for any help,
Michael.

I had a similar sounding problem with my 99 V6 with around 60,000 miles recently, turned out to be one of the ignition coils died.

A flashing SES light does in fact mean that the PCM has detected a misfire.

More than like its a bad wire.......
2nd.........one of the coils.

And being as how you said that the "cat" smells......then that would point to the ignition system rather than a failed injector.......cause the cat is smelling cause of the raw unburned fuel.

Get it fixed ASAP.........or your cat is gonna get plugged.
