rear hatch

this is basically for everyone...well, i was washing my car the other day, and was cleaning it out, i had the hatch open, and notice there is oil spilling from the shocks or whatever those things are that keep the hatch open...i bought this car about 5 months ago, and he gave my a recept on what he did to the car, he replaced them, so they are pretty much brand new!! and now, its gettin a little colder outside, and seems that the colder it is, the more my hatch wont stay open, do i need to get new ones or what?

There called struts and yes you need new ones. If you know where he got them from try to get a exchange or refund. Might want to buy a different brand. It takes a torx bit to get them out either T45 or T50 I forget. The seal most of broke, if there is only oil on one you should try just replacing the one. Brand new struts for the hatch run about $30 each.

It is easy to replace them especially when they have been replaced before. It's really hard the first itme because the screws are stuck so tight. You just have to reach behind the plastic panel by the rear seat and you will see the screw that takes the torx bit, then on the other end of the strut bar theres a little clip you stick a flat head in and pry off the clip. Just be sure you have a secure way of holding up the hatch while you put in the new strut.

Are you not able to return the broken one? If not you could check ebay for a used one, or get a new one from kragen. They have a book at kragen that will tell you which one you need.
