Questions about 3.4

I just helped friend of mine put a new tranny in his Firebird. He had been have the all famous missfire and changed plugs and wires and still had it. So i have a scan tool ( GM Tech 2 ) hooked it up and have one question about the ( Ignition Control Cam SI ) It kept flashing 0 off and on. Now i am no expert and i am not for sure what this is, its purpose, or what it is suppose to read. I wanna say its the cam positioning sensor, but not for sure. So i now turn it over to u guys and hopefully someone can help me out.
Thanks guys, Brad

the famous misfire on the 3.4L ??? i havnt heard many people complain about misfires on the 3.4L.. oh well

and the cam position sensor shouldnt be causing a misfire, its used only to find TDC the 0 that was flashing might have been the sensor working... im not familliar with the scanner you used though, so if the camposition sensor were to malfunction the car would have multiple misfires, what cylinder is the miss on ?

My tech 2 does not have a missfire graph, so i am not for sure. I haven't taken the time to pull wires and find out which one it is. I to haven't heard too much about anyone having a missfire with the 3.4. The only other thing i can think of is maybe a bad coil pack. I am going to pull the plugs back out check them over. But as for the sensor i hope it is working properly, i just wasn't for sure cause i didn't know what it was. Thanks for the help. I will let you guys know if i get if figured out.
Thanks Brad

yeha my understanding of the cam sensor is that it is for the limp mode if the crank sensor fails

deffinetly check the plugs and wires first
