Oil Pressure

I just picked up a 94 camaro with a 3.4 and after the engine gets warm the oil pressure only puts out about 10 psi. The needle is hanging just above the redline. Is this normal for a car with 126,xxx miles on it? What kind of oil pressures do you guys have?

Where does the needle point to at start-up?

Probably a bad sensor.

At start up the psi reads around 40, but when it gets up to operating temp thats when it starts to read low.

My 98 w/3.8 does that kinda crap to me. I think that its the sensor cause it jumps around a bit.

Where is the switch located? My lil RS is about to hit 110,000 miles..so it would be nice to have an eye on my motor.

The sending unit is located right above the oil filter. I replaced it today, but the pressure is still pretty low.

If you gauge reads off, I wouldn't worry about it. Odds are it is a sensor...check everything out though. If everything is OK, don't worry about it.

I try to stay away from heavier oils unless there is a real good reason to.

Here is what to try: Use 20w - 50 oil if the pressure goes up, then your oil pump is weak and needs to be replaced. another way to tell is let the car come up to normal operating temp then listen to the motor with the hood up for the rods to knock, that also will tell you if the oil pump is going bad. either way low oil pressure is not good, it could cause you to spin or score a bearing and you will have to rebuild. hope this helps
