Noisy fuel pump?

I have a 1997 Firebird, 3.8L, 5 spd and the fuel pump is EXTREMELY loud and annoying. All you can hear while you're inside the car is the high pitched sound that reverberates like crazy. Its driving me crazy…….almost to the point I won’t drive the car. What would cause the fuel pump to be that loud? The car only has 70,000 miles on it and I purchased it with 69,000 but the fuel pump is getting louder. Is this a sign the pump is about to take a dump on me or is it something else? Any help is appreciated.

I replaced the fuel filter yesterday.....the inside portion was broken apart and the gas inside it was brown. Put a Wix filter on and the pump seems to be more quite, but still not silent. I'm assuming the original owners never thought to replace it. Now lets hope that doesn't cause the pump to fail. Could be part of the reason I was only getting 19 mpg on the highway instead of the stickered 30........
