m5 tranny fluid change
you really dont need to change the trans fluid in a manual very often at all, i really doubt your 99 needs it yet , how many miles do you have... my automatic went 105K before i changed it...
I did mine, and my rear fluid about 2 or 3 thousand ago. (At around 55,000 miles) I can't remember the details. But, first off, buy a repair manual. If you will be doing ANY work on your car, you should have one.
Ok, Tranny fluid change, here we go:
1. Might help to have things warmed up. Doesn't have to be, but it can't hurt.
2. Get the car up on Jack Stands Nice and high, and as level as you can get it.
3. Look at your Tranny. You will see two (2) plugs, on the right side (I think.)
4. Get your drain pan ready, and pull out the BOTTOM plug. let ALL of the the fluid drain out. I acutaly took a hose, and a vaccum pump and sucked more outa the bottom of the trany, where it was lower then the drain hole.
5. Put the lower plug back in and take out the top plug.
6. This is where its REALLY important that you have the car REALLY REALLY level. If its not,you won't get enough in the tranny, which is bad.
7. Take the fluid, and put in this top hole. Keep filling it up until it starts coming out of the hole. This means it full. Put the top plug back in, and bring the car down.
8. Just to be on the safe side, you might want to check the level at the next oil change by taking out the top plug and sticking your little finger in the hole. If the fluid is right up to, or right below the top hole, you are ok.
Good luck!

Might be a better idea to remove the top plug first. It would really suck if you drained your fluid then for some ungodly reason couldn't get the fill plug out.

Oh yeah. I just checked my tranny fluid while I had my car up on stands. I'm wrong, the plugs are on the RIGHT side of the Tranny. I'll edit my previous post.
Oh Yeah to fill the tranny, you will need some sort of squeeze bottle. The fill hole up up where you can't use a funnel, or just pour in to it.
What will need to do, is take a squeeze bottle, with a tip on the end. Then, take a peice of tubing, and put that on the end of the tip. Then you can flip the bottle over and squeeze it, and run the hold the tubing in the tranny hole. Belive me, doing something like this will make it TONS easier to fill, and much less messy. Though look out when you are squeezing, I had the tube come off, and I squirted tranny fluid all over myself.

first a4 flush/drain should be @ 30K, and every 15 after that is what I've heard. I intend to stick to that and hope that my tranny provides me with no problems. It's not hard at all and isn't expensive either.
