My 1996 v6 is throwing 1870 codes on a rebuilt 4l60e tranny. Looks like these trannys are defective. Has anyone ever installed a 2001 4l60e in a 1996 fbody. I know the drive shaft splines are different but is that all that's different? This things driving me nuts. Lots of people have this problem with this tranny and GM will not recall it. Guess they make too much money off it.

 

 

In 97 they went to a removable bellhousing so it won't fit. Driveshaft splines are not different. Nothing is different. It just won't fit cause of the bellhousing. Also the rear part is different and won't mount to your TA, but you can always get an aftermarket TA that doesn't mount on the trans.

For a 96, only a 96 trans will fit. Mine is rebuilt and drives just fine. I did have one crackhead mechanic try to rip me off on a rebuild and he did a bad job or screwed it up on purpose when I wasn't falling for his BS. A good rebuild will last a long time, esp on a V6.

 

If your tranny is thrashed, and you need a new one you can get one from the year you need for a decent price used at a slavage yard such as F-parts Salvage in Bristol PA. You can contact them at www.fparts.us I would like to see someone put a turbo 350 or 400 in place of 4L60E transmission. This electronic trans is trash, even the 700R4 takes more abuse then that, although it cant handle as much power, it didnt break every 40,000 miles under agressive driving.

 

Many high hp V8 guys run TH400s and TH350s, but for a V6 it wouldn't make any sense. They only have 3 gears and no brackets exist to mate it to the 3.8 as far as I know. 4L60E is weak, but can be made strong enough for 11s even 10s. Race build tranny is a very good investment for those who race often.
