LT1 or LS1?
The LS1s peak torque is at 4,000 rpm. The LT1s peak torque is at 2,400 rpm. I am not sure if modding would level out the LT1s torque curve. Even if it does I would still go with the LS1. The price difference between a used LT1 and used LS1 is usually about $1,000 and you would spend close to that to make it keep up with a LS1. Plus the LS1 is newer, lighter, and gets better mileage. I used to think it was a problem fitting a LS1 in a 93-97, but I have heard otherwise.

LS1's have more base HP, crazy top end pull and get insanely good gas mileage. I have seen some M6's report 30 MPG on the highway. That's just crazy for a high performance V8. Gotta love technology.
I would make money the deciding factor. If you can afford it then get the LS1. They love mods and respond very well to N20. But it's also nice to get a LT1 for under 7k and use the money saved for mods. Lots of LT1's out running mildly modded LS1's with a decent heads/cam package. Plus having a title and no car payment is a beautiful thing. But I still wouldn't trade my LS1 as I love it way too much.
Good Luck

And topend power is nuts . I beat on my LS1 on my way back form florida and got 28mpg , thats being caught in a traffic jam ! If your on a budget i would go LT1 . Mine has 410's and it is crazy strong down below . But i have had 2 LT1 cars and my LS1 and i can tell you one thing , My LS1 bird feels like it is way more quality then my LT1 car , and im talking the whole car not just the tight sounds of the engine . Cant complain about tyhe LT1 though I have over 176k and it has yet to break down , 2 years of hard driving and all i done is a fix the transmission " I broke it " It has never broke down , not once . So if you got a few extra thousand , i would definitly go LS1

I remember seeing used LS1 engines for around $3500 and I think that was just the engine.
