k&n on a 2.2 cavalier

my roomate has a 2.2 cavalier. he doesnt care about performance, its just a commuter, and wants the filter on as cheap as possible, so i was wondering, would one of those generic cones just fit right on the throttle body? or even the stock pipe just without the airbox? hes not looking to pay 100$ for a cavilier kit or anything..

If he does not care about performance then why not go with just the stock filter?
