High Output Alternator at Idle problem
High Output Alternator at Idle problem
The car is a 2001 Camaro V6 3.8
The bearing on my stock alternator went out, so I changed it with a high amp output alternator which is 220 amp. I have a powerful audio system in the car, so I wanted a better alternator.
The problem is at idle when the car is idling at 700 rpm, the battery meter starts falling and even goes into the red zone. If I hit the gas slowly to 900-1000 rpm, the meter starts going up again...if I let it go, it starts falling again, even the lights dim and that is without the radio turned on, if I were to turn it on, the car might even die out. When driving, there is no problem because the meter shows over 13 and it's charging fine.
Does anyone know a fix for this or what the problem is?
I've heard that high amp alternators do not charge at idle...is this true?

Re: High Output Alternator at Idle problem
The alternator should charge at all speeds. I just had a brand new powermaster rebuilt that had a bad regulator out of the box. Brand new just means not broken yet
