Fuel Pump?
Fuel Pump?
I know this is not a f-body but i have a 94 grand am for a winter beater and it just broke down on me today. I was just driving up to the store and i would push the gas and nothing would happen car was still running just wouldnt go no where then just shut down. I tried to start it again and it wanted to turn over just didnt. It has the 3.1 v6. Im thinking fuel pump. Any other info would be much apreciated thanks
Re: Fuel Pump?
Buy or rent a fuel pressure tester first, and check the fuel pressure. At the same time buy a Hayne's manual, or ask on a GA board to learn the correct ratings for your motor.
If the pressure is too high, it's probably not the pump.
If the pressure is too low, replace the fuel filter and check again.
If the pressure is still too low after the filter install, check the pump voltage.
If the fuel pump voltage is fine, check the fuel pressure regulator.
If all else fails, replace the pump.
If you get the Haynes manual (you should anyway) it will tell you a very detailed way to diagnose fuel problems. The above is just a general guideline.
Possibillity it's not fuel related though, could be a bad 02, cat, or an ignition problem.
Always check Fuel and Spark first, and in that order.

Re: Fuel Pump?
Most times there will still be some gas left inside. If it was a year or so I'd just do a siphon and filter change.. But three years or more?
I'd remove the tank, and have the tank cleaned and resealed. Then I'd buy a new pump sock, and a new fuel filter. That's if I wanted to start it. I don't think I have to mention the oil change, tune-up, or battery check.
