Question Engine running rough and rotten egg smell

Hi there,

I apologize if I should have posted in another section...

I have a 2001 RS camaro and since last nite, Im having issues with the engine. First last nite it wouldnt start. I think the starter is OK, but the engine would stall after 2-3 seconds. So I gave it a rest til this morning and this morning it started OK, but then the engine ran rough, I mean the car was kind of shaking more than usual. I took it for a short drive and noticed the following:

- the engine runs rough when I get to lower RPMs and at idle
- loss of power a especially when starting from stop signs/lights
- an odor of sulphur and rotten egg
- I checked the oil level and it diminished by half since my last oil change mid-Feb (4,000miles).

Any idea what the problem is? Im thinking of bringing it in for a 60,000 miles check tomorrow or Friday. Is it safe to drive (10 miles)??

Thanks for your help/advice, regards MJ

Is the SES on or flashing? First thing I'd do is get it scanned for any codes, places like autozone/advance will to it for free.

the rotten egg smell is from the cat converter more than likely its clogged thats why its not starting and running rough.

Yes actually I noticed the check engine light first came on without flashing, but started flashing yesterday. Im not using the car at the moment, but is it safe to drive 10 miles to the mecanics??

Thanks alot for your help. MJ

x2

Your flashing SES light will probably say it has a misfire. The light flashes when you get a misfire, misfire is probably caused from the plugged cat.

why its all happening

the reason thats happening it because your catylitic converter is clogged. I had the SAME EXACT problem with my car. the first thing i noticed was a crappy smell. them a complete and total loss at lower RPMS and soon it moved onto the whole power curve. So now i replaced it with a high flow and it is 10 times better. That is my suggestion
