electrical problem after rain
electrical problem after rain
First I am new here. dont have alot of posts cuz i really dont know much about this car. I love it though and have had it a while......
1996 camaro 3.8l v-6 bought with 3 miles on it....
maintenance free.. well almost.. at 38k miles (out of warranty) 1 wire and 1 plug went bad... so idiots replaced the wires and the one plug... i got mad cuz they didnt replace all plugs. their excuse was that they didnt want it to cost me that much.... umm they are dealerships.. they are supposed to rip me off!!!!!!!
anyhow at 41k miles roller cam and roller lifters got wiped... seemed that 2 roller lifters decided to stop rollin.....
so bought with 3 miles and at 100k i had all plugs and wires changed.... car ran great.....
117k miles is where the problems started.... it would rain and the car would buck a bit... loose power.... idle at a traffic light.... amp meter would dive down, oil guage never held steady kinda vibrating like, tach drop from about 800rpm to 200rpm... car almost would stop... hit the gas and chug chug chug.... no backfiring just lack of power... kind of like having a governer set at 3mph and trying to floor it...... so i took it back to the guys that did the wires.....they said one of the plugs were not firing... defective wires..... so they replaced them for free but charged me the labor.......of $90.... hell at least they fixed it then i dont care... not goona argue.....
now it has rained here and there but the car hasnt been driven in the rain and now at 118k it does the same thing..... I was talking to someone and they said their friend had a problem like that and was a sensor.... this wasnt a camaro... but can that be the case? anyone know how i can troubleshoot this situation? my father has been a mechanic for over 40 years and he said the electronics on 96 and newer he doenst know how to do... he showed me the paperclip trick on my 86 z-28 but that no longer works.....
any help greatly appreciated cuz there is not one mechanic worth a damn within my vicinity... I am tired of trying different mechanics and finding that they dont know what they are doing......
thanks

hmm well first off
wait till late at night or a dark garage really dark
1take a fine mist spray bottle of water and spray your plug wires
look for little arcs if you see them you got bad wires
2 it could be a missfire from the heat guards on the pass side (around the plug wires i belive the 3.8 had them)
and if neither one of those are it start by using that spray bottle and try spraying one thing at a time (ie under hood fuse box) grounds etc and see when the prob starts

well my father is a mechanic.. old school for the last 40+ years.. he said get some electrical sealer spray... do the coils and wires there... well that did it...... so that problem is gone..!!!!
but now the next problem arises!!! but that is another tread...
