when i bought my car i did the car fax and according to the vin i have a 96 rs. but i also have no ground effects, single turn down exhaust, and no posi. i have also wondered the same questions, but i have also never seen older hen the 98 body style with the rs kit, and i have seen very few v6s with stock dual tips, but they do exist. the posi could have been replaced by the previos owner. i would check your owners manual some people actually keep track of the maintennce log and it will have it in there. otherwise i would consider the milage and maybe something happened so it needed to be replaced. or maybe your car is just a freak. in a good way.

 

I don't mean to be an ***, I'd just like to clear up alot of misconceptions about the "RS"

I think those of you that think your insurance company thinks your car is an RS are mistaken...either that or the insurance company is stuck in 1992, when RS was the base model.

There is no difference in VIN's between the base model and the RS...so what you are seeing is Camaro / (camaro) RS, meaning it could be a Camaro OR Camaro RS...since RS is mostly just an appearance package it makes no difference to them.

the 4th gen's had two RS's:

from 96-97, the true GM factory RS, which is more common. had RS emblems and a body kit...thats it, they had the same single exhaust pipe as the others.

from 2001-2002 it was an add on to the base model by SLP that included a set of stripes and a Z28 muffler, and possibly z28 sway bars...these were NOT available with the GFX/body kit.

the 98+ body kit is not the "RS" kit, but a "sport appearance package" featuring ground effects and the RS spoiler. It could be had on V6s or Z28s....basically an RS add-on, but thats not what GM called it.

Either way you had to order Limited Slip/Posi seperate from the RS package....so its very possibly you could have oredered a RS package with no posi, OR a base model with one. You did not need to order Y87 (better gears, posi, rear disks, z28 steer ratio) to get a posi. You could simply have G80, which is a standalone posi not attached to any other options.

Since the car is a 1997 and has no body kit, I think its safe to say it is not a RS (unless someone who owned it before you took it off...) it's probably a base camaro with G80, or someone threw a posi on somewhere down the road.

It is also possible to spin both wheels with a open differential, it doenst happen often, because both wheels would need exacttly the same amount of power/traction, but it has happened before.

I'm going out later to a vacant parking lot and doing a burnout, if one wheel spins, I got myself a peg-legger. If both spin, good for me, I got a full-posi.

But i'm in the market for a new car anyway, something with 8 cylinders and a burly exhaust note

 

I have a 97 RS it has badges, fully loaded, GFX and fast as hell, yeah its the 3.8L 3800 Auto. and mine has dual pipes. sadly its the same muffler and pipes it came with when it was born... its starting to get a lil louder than what it should be. Time to change it.... now to find one that rumbles when i hit gas, yet almost silent when im not moving...

dual exhaust pipes on a V6 means Y87....a Y87/RS is pretty rare in my experience....awesome.

 

Ok, my whole life i've always wanted to own a camaro, thought i knew almost everything about them... Guess I was wrong, even thought it took an act of war to get a camaro, and now that i have one its rare??? whats a Y87? whats the horse power on this engine anyways????

Y87 is the V6 performance package;
it includes a Limited Slip Differential, Z28 Steer Ratio, Dual Outlet Muffler, Rear Disk Brakes, and Better Gearing on Automatics. This was an add-on package to any car that came with a V6


The RS cars were only around for a two year run, I don't think there were more than 2500 made per year...during those years only a handful of cars were made with Y87. so to get both. its no were close to unheard of, but in the V6 world it's nice to have

 

Ok ok i got a brain teaser, Ok watch this I have a 94 3.8 Camaro but it does not do a "peg legger". When i smoke the tires it does both. The other day it was the first time ive ever done a stand still. When i did i was shocked to see twin tire markings. I have a pic here. I have no idea how that happend But i take it as a good thing.

Cool. are you sure you don't have a 1994 3.4L? not that it makes much difference, a v6 is a v6 no matter what you do to it. because the first year the 3.8 was offered was 1995 and even then it only was in automatic california cars, by my understanding.

The V6 camaros were not all open differentials (a common misconception). There is RPO: Y87 "v6 performance package" which included a Limited Slip Differential (was it available back in '94?") and the RPO: G80 which is a limited slip unit, all by itself. check for that on your RPO sheet. If neither of those are there and you are sure it has limited slip, than a previous owner of the car must have added it.

Also, it has been said that you can get both wheels to spin with an open dif., if you get perfectly even traction to both wheels, I've never accomplished it myself, but I have heard too many different people claim this to just completly trash it as an option.

It would be a 3.4 unless he himself put it in there... i have go to spin on my 95 for a bit , then as i tookk off only one continued down the line.

 

yeh sorry dude i ment to say 3.4 typo after reading about 3.8's so much i stuck in my head. I know there is no such thing as a 94 3.8

 

I have a 96 camaro, and it has rear disk brakes, and dual exhaust but no body kit or ground effects on it. So does that mean that the previous owner took it off, or what?
