Question 3400 to 3800 swap

A couple months ago I bought a 95 Camaro v6 project. I assume it was originally fitted with a 3400, but the guy had just completed an engine swap before he sold it to me. He installed a 3800 from a 98 Firebird v6.
The car starts quickly and the engine runs fine. There is a CHECK ENGINE light on whick I haven't scanned yet to determine the problem yet.

Another problem is upon deceleration, it seems the transmission doesn't always downshift. It has a terrible trans fluid leak, so I haven't driven it until I get a chance to work on it.
I just bought a new air bag for the steering wheel since the old one was deployed, but I haven't installed it yet.
The car's brakes also grab terribly.

Now any number of these things could trigger the CHECK ENGINE light, but my question is, Will there be an electrical problem or hiccup resulting from the 3400 to 3800 swap? I doubt that he would have swapped computers, he probably just pulled one engine and put in the other. I wont know until I get a scanner on it, but does anyone have any info that may help me before I get started?

Re: 3400 to 3800 swap

no f-body ever had a 3400 stock, in 95 both a 3.4L and 3800 motor were offered as well as the LT1

a 3.4L PCM will not work at all with a 3800 motor, so that wont be an issue

scan it and see what that tells us..

Ok, my bad. The 8th vin letter is a K indicating the car was born with a 3800. *whew*
Hopefully I can get it scanned next weekend.

Thanks for the help!

You got one of the '95s with a 3.8? Those were pretty rare weren't they? Hope you get everyting sorted out soon.

Yup, I believe they were made only for sale in california due to emission laws.

Far be it from me to ever have any trace of luck, but heck, I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
