Had a good race with an LT1 B4C!
Was cruising home after dinner with the girlfriend tonight on Mopac here in Austin when I saw a Camaro up ahead, so I decided to pull closer. Quad exhaust with some aftermarket "LT1" labels, nice clean red f-body. I whipped by him once and he quickly followed. From there, we played cat and mouse back and forth during the few opportunities that traffic would allow some gaps for us to line up at.
We were both being a bit selfish -- he kept wanting to start from about 80 (low 4th gear for me, not a good spot for AWD DSM's) and I kept wanting to go from 70 (Perfect 3rd gear spot).
I could tell he had a damn strong car from a roll for me -- I'm pretty sure he had me on top end even if I had gotten to start in the sweet-spot of my powerband, which told me it was no stock LT1. We couldn't catch a light to save our lives, but ended up waiting behind a few cars at one point. Really friendly guy, asked what I ran. I told him that I figured mid/high 12's, though in hindsight it probably would've been more truthful to say high 12's with how damn hot it is in Texas right now (bad enough for a turbo, even worse for a turbo car running a dinky stock sidemount intercooler). I told him that most of my grunt was definitely down low with the all-wheel-drive. I asked what he'd done other than exhaust. He just said,"It's the interceptor package."
We then turned onto another bigger street with less traffic. I waited in a lower gear from a slow roll for him to get next to me, where we both hit it. I pulled him by about a car, *maybe* car and a half before shutting down in third for traffic. We pulled up next to him again and I complimented him on his car and told him about the board. He asked for advice on mods he could do, but I blanked out (honestly didn't remember all of what came with the B4C package, guess I should've suggested an LT4 hotcam?) and told him to just hit me up on the board and I'd find out what I could.
He said his only runs at the track were 13.3's with lots of traction/wheelspin problems. I'd believe it -- it was a quick damn LT1. I don't think the B4C was the only thing goin' for that car. B4C's don't have the quad tips anyway, right?
I think a heads-up race from a stop with us would've been a pretty close race -- maybe with me barely holding him off by the 1/4 if I got a good launch. Or him passing me at the end if I didn't.
He was a really cool guy. My girlfriend even remarked at what a class act he was. Hopefully he'll join the board.
