Fast Modded STI With A Skilled Driver

Was out and about tonight looking for someone to run (its 39 degrees here so there isn't many people out in fast cars) and ran into a silver STI. I pulled up behind him at a light and followed for 100 feet or so, when I got next to him at about 40 he hit it, I wasn't ready and by the time the tires stopped spinning he was a good 4 cars ahead of me so I hit it and finally passed him (top of third) then shut it down because it was a residential area in 200 feet or so. He followed me around a series of turns that got us out to another 2 lane road, he passed me and pulled even. We yelled back a few times about where to run and we hit it on the third honk, I pulled about 3 cars on him (25-90) and we headed over to the area where we agreed to race. We pulled into the local parking lot and gave each other props on the few runs we had just made. Found out he has an engine management system, upgraded turbo, nitto's, bigger intercooler and a cat back minus the cat pre turbo.

We head out to the light where I usually race and we line up, I yell to him that this is where he hands me my *** due to my GSA's and the cold pavement, he laughed and said he put in two clutches in 30K from hard AWD launches! Anyways the light changes, and as I struggle for traction he has at least 3 cars on me...DAMN that was a good launch! So now I'm playing catch-up, 1st gear was useless so I short shifted to 2nd, ran out second and gained a car, hit third and I had gained another car and by the end of third I flew past him going about 10 MPH faster than him.

We stop at the next light and I ask him if he missed a gear, he said no and he turned his psi "Way the hell up" and said it would be closer this time and said that his last launch was perfect and it usually isn't....ok. Light turns green and he gets the early jump due to another incredible launch, mine wasn't as bad this time and when I shifted to second he had 2 cars on me. I hit third and got a nasty slide going (By the way when I power shift into second I leave at least 20 feet of rubber) get a bit sideways but counter fast so I stay almost straight, and again by the time I wound out third I passed him going at least 15 miles an hour faster and kept adding to my lead (about 5 cars by 105) then we both shut down.

I have never had an sti, wrx or evo launch that hard on me before, this kids combo and his driving was impressive. We pulled into a local pub parking lot and both got out, he was in shock that I could come back from that bad of a launch (Him 3-4 cars ahead) and I could still fly past him by 100. I on the other hand was not shocked that I beat him but was shocked again at how hard he launched that car! I don’t know if it was his car or his driving but every STI I have raced on the STREET has not been able to keep up by 5 or 6 car lengths behind me on anything from a roll. I have raced 5 or more from a light and they have only gotten 1 car on me by the top of first, then I usually start running past them in every other gear.

To sum up....I almost had to bow down to an STI...almost. From a roll...never but this kid could launch this thing hard and for that he gets props. Time for some mods and a tire that can hook!

Thanks for reading my looooong post!

W/ his mods and his awd I would think that he would get the jump and you would never catch him, you do have an extremely strong stock LS1 though...The STI's are almost 12 second cars bone stock...maybe he wasnt so great of a driver after all...anything can happen on the street, none the less good kill

Re: Fast Modded STI With A Skilled Driver

After the few runs we had from a roll I knew I had more than him but again that launch was killer. He also said he hasn't lost to a camaro since his mods.

I ran a 12.99 stock with some better street tires than I had on tonight but that was when it was 90 degrees out, its was 30's tonight so the car really pulled up top.

I was surprised I was able to catch up from such a killer launch that he laid out, he had 2-4 cars on me at 20 MPH!

The more I think about it im surprised I ever caught up after that! He said he runs 12.4 to 12.6 and he's pretty consitant at the track, I guess the streets got him a few tenths of at least.

He should have trapped 101-102 mph stock, and with all that crap he didn't at least reach 110 traps? I'd be pissed!

02's are the meanest of the LS1s though, no doubt about that.

Good kills. What doesn't seem right though, is that you said you guys raced from 25-90 and you beat him by three cars, but from a stop you beat him by 4 or 5 cars to 100? STI's are beasts off the line especially with all the upgrades he had. Doesn't make sense to me, but good kills.

Good kill. Watch out for those STI's though, my buddy has one that has suprised alot of LS1's around my area. The last time he ran at the track he ran a 13 flat . Since then he has upgraded his turbo and done some tuning, now he is running 18psi just for break-in period. He was told after the upgrades his car can handle 24psi, dont know if he will push it that high though. Anyways, once again good kill.

Re: Fast Modded STI With A Skilled Driver

I highly Doubt that sti was modded, One of my buddys has a sti , with exhaust intake Boost controller etc, And he killed my buddys stalled Bolton Ls1 everytime
My Buddy's Ls1 was running 12.3s 12.4s at the time They raced, The stil would pull at least 2 cars On the ls1 out of the whole, and pull another car before the ls1 topend took over by then It was over, ls1 would stop the pull a may have a slight gain but had no chance of catching in the 1/4 mile.... Are you sure it was not a Modded WRX?, Also seen Stock sti's running 13.1's and 13.0s bone stock
Then again you might have a factory freak Ls1 , Not taking up for The STI , But there 300 Horsepower Awd B@sterds

Pfft?? Around the net, STI's with an upgraded turbo, ecu, and turbo back are making 350-400 at the wheels depending on boost. So how does a stock LS1 get buried on the launch only to catch and pass the AWD 3200 lbs. ~400 rwhp car before 100 mph?

Not calling bs or anything, but the numbers don't really compute. Sounds like a modded WRX, not STI. Anything can happen on the street though, as we all know.

Stock STi's put down 238 horsepower to the wheels. An upgraded turbo, a turbo back, and ecu get 112-162 wheel horsepower? Sounds like an aweful lot for those mods!

A Sti with a reprogrammed ecu, and new turbo back puts down 278 wheel horsepower, which is still not up to the wheel HP of a 2002 LS1. That means that the bigger turbo is adding another 72-122 wheel horsepower above that yet, if your numbers are correct. Seems like an aweful lot. Where did you get your numbers? I got mine from www.cobbtuning.com which is argueably the most popular WRX and Sti tuners.

Re: Fast Modded STI With A Skilled Driver

Scratch that first post. I made it at 1 am and confused the numbers I've seen on the evo with the STI numbers. I don't know what the STI would run with those mods. I'll see if I can find something comparable online. Going by your numbers, adding a larger turbo to a 278 whp car should easily net another 50 whp (my z can pick up 80-100 hp by switching to sport 500 turbos which are only 20% larger than stock) if not more depending on turbo size and boost level. Could be a lot of factors involved I guess. It's all speculation, cause we don't know what the STI in this race was really running.
