QA1 Rear Shock install question

Ok, im just about to do this and i realize that the bolt for the bottom of the shock is not included (which is so dumb because the original one cannot be removed). What all do I need to get this job done? They supply the hardware for the top of the shock, but nothing for the bottom.

Pretty stupid if you ask me...

I did a search on here and found Injuneer's page about rear shock install, but apparently I am stupid or something because his explanation for what you need to go out and get isnt totally clear. Any ideas? Thanks all.

Re: QA1 Rear Shock install question

Here's what I did. It's basically the same thing that Fred did, except he used a nut as a spacer, and I am using washers. You need (2) 2 1/2" long Grade 8 1/2" diameter bolts. (8) 1/2" Grade 8 flat washers, (2) 1/2" Grade 8 lock washers, and (2) 1/2" Grade 8 nuts. Slide the bolt through the eye on the bottom of the shock, then put three washers on the end of the bolt, slide the bolt through the hole in the shock mount, install one flat washer, one lock washer, and then the nut. Tighten the nut and you're done. You should be able to find everything you need at your local hardware store. Just make sure that you use Grade 8, not Grade 5!

Re: QA1 Rear Shock install question

Make sure you have lower mounting bolts. (HAL specific, but for any shocks, make sure you have a lower mounting bolt). First I asked HAL what bolts to get. They replied "Try this, Dorman PN 661-001 Universal Shock mount Bolt". Well, after about half a dozen auto parts stores (Pep Boys, Kar Parts, Thul’s), and no Dorman’s of that description, I bought the following:

-Two 2-1/2" long by ½" diameter x 13tpi (coarse) Grade 8 bolts. The "fine" threads might be a better choice, but they were not available in -1/2" lengths where I bought them.

-Two matching ½" coarse Grade 8 nuts.

-Two "lesser" ½" nuts, these were thinner than the Grade 8, to be used mainly as spacers.

-Four matching ½" flat washers

-Two ½" lock washers.
Maybe a photo will make it clearer?????

Re: QA1 Rear Shock install question

so you are only putting spacers on one side of the shock (the side that goes through the shock mount)?

If so, that seems easy enough, I guess I am just a little slow today... LOL

Bolt head - washer - shock rubber bushing - washer - nut used as spacer - axle mounting bracket - lock washer - nut

A buddy of mine found a stock Mustang shock mount bracket that works perfectly. Its a u-shaped braket that bolts into the axle mounting bracket, the shock goes into the "u" and a bolt goes through the "u" to hold the shock.

Actually, QA1 makes one of those. It's right here:

Here's a picture of it: It's on page 18. Part number is SS200SD

ok... thanks guys...

actually one last question... why do they give you TWO sleeves for each shock? Dont you only need one to slide through the bottom of the shock?

Re: QA1 Rear Shock install question

Mine only had one set, but that was 7 years ago. Is it possible the two sets of sleeves are for two different diameter bolts?

You are probably right, I did recall having some left over sleeves and some other misc. stuff left over after the install. Is it possible that these shocks are used on more applications other then the 82-02 f-bodies so additional hardware is included to make it work with the other applications?
