how to take off wheel studs?

Well an unfortunate event happened with my car. While driving on the expressway my wheel decided to come off the car while doing 60 mph. In the act of coming off, it sheared off all of the wheel studs. My question is, how do i take off the sheared studs and replace them?

wow that sucks. You should be able to tap them out. You tap the studs from outer side of hub to the inner side. If they are sheared off, you might have to use your imagination. Maybe tap them out with a bolt that is slightly smaller than the shaft of the wheel stud, and poke them out.

good luck

The studs are pressed in. They can take quite a bit of pounding to break them loose. Technically, you run the risk of damage to the bearings from pounding on it. You're supposed to use a press to get them out. But I think most people just hammer them out. I've done the front on both sides to install longer studs, just hammering them out.

Use a tapered drift and at least a 1 lb hammer if they're sheared off.

Re: how to take off wheel studs?

the bearings are usually alot stronger than any pounding you will do

they are press fitted, if they are sheared off, then ake off the rtor or drum whatever you have, and i use a 3/8 drive extension, it fits very well and it would shatter or bend if u hit it with a 3lb sledge, and just use a lug nut to put the new ones in

now how a wheel came off while doing 60, your frind has a little explaining to do

if one lug is loose it could cause enough vibration to loosen the others and once they're loose the wheel will jostle back and forth enough to shear the studs but the vibration is soo harsh that any remotely intelligent fool would pull over and inspect the problem

but what do i know
