Has anyone seen the LSx motor timing gears? I saw a double roller one on a car the other day and it has several holes drilled out for weight savings.

1. Can we use this on our cars since it looks identical other than the holes?
2. Why doesn't anyone make them like that for our cars?

 

1. No it won't work on an LT1. Even if it fit, which it doesn't, there's no provision for the water pump drive gear.
2. I fail to see that there would be much of a gain to it. Remember that the cam gear only moves 1/4 the speed of the crank gear, so there's not nearly as much rotational mass or whatever as you might think.

 

What's stopping it from fitting? The LT1 double rollers don't have provisions for the waterpump drive gear either, so that wasn't my point.

I'd still think that at 3000 CAM RPMs, the loss of some of that rotational mass should help. If nothing else it will help oil get to the front part of the chain. I'm sure there's a reason it came like that stock on the LS1 motor.

 

I machined out part of the LT4 Extreme Duty cam sprocket to reduce mass. (Its actually a lot "smoother" than is appears in the photo, due to the resolution of the photo and the compression that was used):

That's what I was thinking about doing. Did you do it with a CNC or just eyeball it with a mill?

 

It was layed out and cut with a mill in a machine shop.
