Picking LT1 heads/cam just got MORE complicated
Picking LT1 heads/cam just got MORE complicated
I just noticed some pricing changes and thought I'd throw the information out there for those who haven't looked recently.
Ai Full port WITH cam = $1,695
http://www.advancedinduction.com/AiProductsLT1.html
LE3 Heads/Cam = $1,850
http://www.eportworks.com/LT1LE3.htm
LE2 Heads/Cam = $1,650
http://www.eportworks.com/LT1LE2.htm
For those people trying decide on a head porting vendor, your task just got harder (or easier
). Some pretty competitive pricing if you ask me.

They do look very compably priced. However, out of curiosity I was looking at both links and this is what I found. The Ai package comes with inferior springs compared to the LE2-3 packages. To upgrade to the same springs it is is another $125, to get a custom cam like the LE packages come with it is an additional $155. Also if I am not mistaken, to upgrade the valves to the Ferrea valves that I believe LE uses it would be another $125. These prices are still very close, and I think that this info may clear up some misconceptions that Ai is so much more costly.

As for the custom cams...I do believe the CC306 and 847 aren't much behind. And the specs on many custom cams are earily similar to off the shelf cams. I run a custom one and would recomend it...but if you just want 400+ a generic comp grind and full ports has been there many times.
Just pointing out that the price to hit 400rwhp isn't as far apart as it once was. Specific applicaitons like huge cams or nitrous/boost will obviously make both vendors prices vary in the more expensive direction.

Re: Picking LT1 heads/cam just got MORE complicated
The price of the Street/econo port (non all out head much like a stage 2) seems to have gone down to $1395. Fully optioned that is only $1635!
That head has gone mid 11s and 415rwhp with an off the shelf grind....

Yeah, ain't that the truth. I was just stating what I saw, thats all. Sure I have my preference, but I am not gonna ***** it out. They are much closer with pricing than i thought. I don't think anyone can go wrong with either of them, but seems everyone has there opinion on who is better. BTW, the custom cams I have seen are far from an off the shelf cam that I have seen. Also my "custom" cam is not anything like an off the shelf. I do believe that an off the shelf grind is pretty far behind a custom grind..again, thats just my opinion based on real world results I have seen.
Re: Picking LT1 heads/cam just got MORE complicated
i had seen a few cam grinds.... im pretty much a noob when it comes to it... but i have to agree with you my custom cam is
.... and all i do is stare at laying there. I would have thought (from just looking at off the shelf cam grinds) that you would need a bigger cam to make more power... (show my lack of knowledge)... but thats not always true

No chance of a price war on this end, LOL.
Once you figure my $1850 LE3 package uses $600 in parts and a custom BILLET cam with gear, that leaves about $850 to cover the portwork, installation of larger valve seats, installation of bronze liners, valve job, milling, cleaning and assembly. Anyone that has done (or priced) any of this will KNOW that there is no room for lowering prices, LOL.
The only way to lower price would be to use less expensive parts and/or skip some machine work like installing the larger valve seats. This is where my LE1 and LE2 heads come in to play.
I have had a few people run mid 11's with my LE1 heads and LE1 cam (low-mid 220 duration) or my LE1 heads and CC 306 cam. ET is all about the cars 60 ft and over all set up.
I have had several people make over 400 RWHP with my LE1 heads and shelf cams over 230 duration or my LE2 cam. Kryckter made 415 RWHP with my LE1 heads and LE2 cam. This $1400 set up and ran 11.0 at 128 MPH with a small NOS system at 4200 ft elevation. Not bad for a 6 speed car.
You can make good HP with any heads if you use a large cam. Anyone that has seen my cam specs will confirm that they are much smaller than most think. My LE2 cam is about 15 degrees lower on duration than the GM 847 cam but still makes the same top end power, just alot more low and mid range power.
I agree, you can't go wrong with either choice.
