Need help with Opti/code problem
Need help with Opti/code problem
Ok first off I have a 97 LT1, 6 speed...First problem I had was with a missfire in #5 & #6..came to be a bad opti, replaced it with new, not a remaned unit..Then came the code P0336- Crankshaft position out of range..Now the question I have is I never had the P0336 code before the opti switch, and now after replacing out the crank position sensor with a new 1 still have the problem...Could there be some way that the opti is outta postion to set this code? Because I have everything aligned the same as when I pulled the old 1 out..Let me have any input from the LT1 gurus for I haven't a clue about these d@mned optis...
Re: Need help with Opti/code problem
The CKP wheel is keyed to the crank..... can't see how the Opti could affect it in any way. The code is not for the crank sensor position, it is for the duty cycle on the sensor's output signal. The PCM is expecting a particular duty cycle on the circuit, and the signal is not within the expected range (58.8% - 77.8%).
Is the connector on tight? Any chance of corrosion on the connector? Any high voltage wires running parallel to the CKP harness wires? Sensor fully inserted in the timing cover?

Re: Need help with Opti/code problem
The opti does have a part to play in this (I had to look it up, lol), in that the PCM counts high resolution pulses in between the low resolution pulses and compares that to the CKP values.
Some book suggested causes to look at:
-connection at the CKP sensor
-excessive timing chain wear
-excessive opti drive backlash or other mechanical opti problem
-CKP reluctor damage or improper installation
-timing cover damage
-CKP sensor contact with the reluctor
If you happened to have the reluctor off, was it put back on reversed? Not sure if that is even a valid concern-just thinking out loud.
Another question is if it is running ok? If not, maybe the opti is not indexed correctly.

Re: Need help with Opti/code problem
The funny thing is that the missfires I had before are gone, thanks to the new opti, but along with the P0336 code the car has lost it's power, and seems to be running rich too..You can smell it's rich plus it's popping out the tailpipe which leads me to believe that it's outta time..I have replaced all plugs and wires, and installed a new coil..And I didn't touch the reluctor

Yea I figured that I would have to tear this sucker apart again figure it's a 2 1/2 hr job I didn't want to do again, but wth...Thanks guys for your input and hopefully it's as simple as that..
