fan and thermostat turn on question?

Alright, when I bought my 96 z28 the guy that previously owned the car had the fan hooked directly to the battery and had a switch in the vehicle to turn the fan on when he wanted to. I am fixing to buy a 160 degree thermostat and due to the fact that I probably can't remember to turn the fan on everytime, I wanted to figure out how to get the fan to turn on automatically I guess when the thermostat opens. Can someone tell me how to do this? Thanks for any help.

Re: fan and thermostat turn on question?

The first thing you need to figure out is why the fan is rigged up like that. When I used to work as a tech., I used to get problems like that where people would wire up switches due to their fans not coming on because of a failed fan relay, short, ect. In other words, it might be there to mask a problem.

On to your question, if you want to run a 160 degree stat, a mail order PCM tune will do the trick from Madz28 or PCMs4Less, which will adjust the fan on/off temps automatically as well as many other things.

Very good answer. The pcms in these cars are some of the easierst and cheapest to access and a retuning one is a great mod even for a totally stock car.

There might not have even been a problem before. Maybe the previous owner just wanted to control the fan manually. I don't like how he rigged it up, though.

There are fan schematics (use the late production one) on my Tech Page if you want to return it to normal. There are many way to override the fans with a switch. Don't know exactly how yours is done.
