Just curious what the purpose of the top part (below the black rectangle with 6 screws) is?

I think that it is EGR related. Not too sure though, Good Question. Anyone else know?

The legend in the pic gives you a clue (clean air). It is a little plenum for the air going to the valve cover for the PCV system.
