going to paint the Z. need lots of suggestions!! come in!
i'm going to repaint the 94 Z sometime in the next year. I was looking for suggestions on about everything. here's what i need to know
1) i want to pain it black again. probably base/ clear, but i can paint enamels and laquers as well. factory is onyx black but i just want the best black. what brand of paint and which color of black should i get? I'm looking for the best brand that is affordable. please include a general price per quart/gallon if you can.
2) what is the best method for removing the old paint?
3) I want an SS hood. anyone know where i can find one for any cheaper than 500 bucks?
4) What kind of additive is best for the bumpers of the car? my front clip looks like ***. I really need to find something that is flexible and wont crack or spider web.
5) what is a good gun to use on the car. i prefer gravity feeds but mine is about 10 years old and it's a cheapy.
Thanks for viewing. please hel me decide.

1. I would use chromabase paint, I use it on every car I paint the price would range from what kind of black you want, you can go to an auto paint store and look at a chart and I would get the best clear cause thats what makes the paint job look the best I use chroma clear. Alot of people will say use ppg but I think dupont chromabase is just as good for half the price, do not use a laquer paint use urethane if your gonna use laquer you might as well just use spray paint and clear it.
2. If it still has its factory paint you can just wet sand it down and all the bad parts use a DA and sand them down and prime them.
3. Ebay
4. I use this flex agent I think it has a gorilla on the front add it to the primer when you prime the front clip make sure you sand it all the way down though b4 you prime it cause the spidercracks will come back through.
5. Hvlp you can even get a cheap one it will leave you with more orange peel but if you put alot of clear once you wet sand and buff it will look like glass.
Hope that helps got anymore questions just ask, and good luck with the car post pics when your done.

thanks much. you know where i can buy this flex additive? also, can you get me a link for the dupont paint you are talking about? i can't find anything
Jun10rp,
I am having problems with the clearcoat coming off the top of the fenders, the middle of the rear spoiler, and around the edge of the back glass. Would you suggest I just get the whole car repainted or can it be sanded down(wet-sand?), dings fixed, and then re-cleared?

Re: going to paint the Z. need lots of suggestions!! come in!
i can tell you it would be easier to wetsand all those parts and try and reclear it. if all esle fails, redo the whole car....but most of the time a good wetsand and reclear works.
Thanks for the info. however could you also tell me if you have any idea how much that would cost? I don't trust myself to do that.
Also, the car has a few dings in it on the right rear 1/4 and the back half of the car's paint is not that great from a lousy paint fix a local body shop did a few years back....

Re: going to paint the Z. need lots of suggestions!! come in!
if you can get someone to paint it for you at a good price, paint the whole car....but if you just take it somewhere and say hey paint my car, it will be several thousand bucks. I'm going to do mine myself for around 500 bucks with supplies and paint.

If you just clear the peeling sections it will look like crap. You need to blend the clear into the good clear and hope that doesn't start to peel back. Your best bet is to just paint the whole car. If you want a real paint job then your looking at between $5,000 to $8000. Or you can go to Macco or someone similar and get the orange peel, run special. Your best bet is to ask around and find a real painter and see if he does side work. You'll save alot of money that way.
To the original poster, try Omni. It's a pretty good paint for an inexpensive price. Any good auto paint store with PPG will sell it. It's what our shop uses on rental cars. On customers cars we only use PPG. If you want to go with a known brand go with PPG, Sikkens, or Dupont. You won't go wrong with any of those.
If your nervous about the flex additive for the bumpers ask the store to mix a little just for that. Flex agent will darken the color, so if I were you I would have the store mix it for you. This is why if your doing a custom stripe or flames you don't normally add the flex. But black should not be to big of a problem. There is quite a lot of blue in the Camaros black.

if you wet sand the old clear off, there wont be any old to mix with...
5-8k for a paint job is the going rate....for a show car. for a solid, not metallic color you're looking around 3-4k for a pretty good paint job. probably up to factory specs...keep in mind factory paint has orange peel, but not terribly bad. the painting isn't expensive, it's the wetsanding. labor for that is a bitch. you're best to find a good older shop ( the one your uncle had paint his '55 back in the day. lol) a lot of those old timers have a good touch and don't charge what your collision repair and paint specialty shops do. for the no orange peel shine like a mother paint jobs, expect 5-8k. now metallics, two tones, and color changing paints are a whole other deal. the orange peel special of that will cost you 5k. for basic onyx black, you're going to have about 4-500 in supplies. the reat is up to the labor. black is not hard to paint at all. two coats of black and 3-5 clears and you'll hnave that same show shine for much less cost and a lot of your spare time. it's all about the colorsanding/ wetsanding
