Found something that works for bug stains
I have a 94 black z28 and have had a few bug stains that I could not get out with bug/tar removers, polishes, ect that I tried in the past. The rest of my paint is imaculate btw. I am talking about the splotches that you get when you clean a bug off that has been there awhile. On a black car it looks like a small discoloration in the paint(sort of gray shade). These are not the pitted marks that can be felt by hand. Anyway, Megriers(sp.) Stratch-X actually is a product that worked on them and it doesn't leave any swirl marks period. It must be a very, very mild abrasive though to get them out but the results are awesome. I also used it on my side mirrors with the same result. Try this stuff out. I have been though it all and this stuff is not crap and will not stratch your car like most other compounds after you are through.

I have some bugs that have etched into the clearcoat. They were there when I bought the car. Polish/wax only makes them more visible because they fill with white on my dark green paint.
I used 3M swirl mark remover on my whole car. It took out the swirls but had no effect on the bug etchings or light scratches.
I haven't tried a rubbing compound yet because I'm afraid it will dull the areas around the problems too.
For etching this bad I guess a repaint is the only option
