membership is $20 and the event itself is $20

The one tomorrow is a BCMA event that is split with the UBCSCC. It's aimed toward novices. I'm sure the UBC guys will let you sign up for their club so you can race. That way you could come out for August as well and it won't be as much of a waste of money.
