is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
i'm laid up from my knee surgery and cant really be beinding and contorting all kinds of ways to change the plugs on my LT1.
i'm spraying a 125 shot and i got TR6 plugs, and its already starting to misfire a bit, and getting some black soot (a lot more than normal) on the back of my car...and its only been about 6 months. i will be changing the coil to a blaster coil or similar and my opti is almost 2 years old with about 15k on it so i'm pretty sure its the plugs.
i was wondering if the denso iridium or autolite plugs of the same heat range last longer than the TR6's. esp. before i drop nearly a bill on those iridiums (12 bucks a pop)
thanks for the help...ps, already reviewed the spark plug chart...love that thing

Re: is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
(IME, NGK's never lasted very long, read very even, or performed that well on the bottle for me) My best results out of any of the plugs Iv'e tried, as well as the longest lasting, most even reading plugs on the bottle have been the regular Autolite 104's (about 1/2 step colder from stock depending on who ya talk to).....and the Autolite 103's that Im currently running(about 1 1/2 steps colder from stock).......since I can tell NO (performance drop) difference naturally aspirated with the Autolite 103's in......I'll always run them for the added safety for "anything" up to a 175 shot
...Also, just about everyone including walmart has them at just a little over 10 bucks for all 8, so there pretty much always worth a try for anyone
.....best gap has been 35-37 thou for either

Re: is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
yeah, i mean i got the gaps and everything figured out, and it runs great on the bottle, they're about 6 or so months old.
so how often do you change your 103's? once a year is acceptable for me, and anyone that has an LT1 knows how much of a PITA it is to change 'em.
this is the kind of input i need though joe, esp. before spending about 12 bucks each on the denso iridiums. thanks

....I change out my 103's every few months or so ,and I check them even more frequently if Im going to the track or spraying alot... This is mostly because on my Vette, with the long tube headers I run, I can litteraly change out every plug with new ones in less than 15 minutes total
.....But I know what ya mean, Changing them on my past LT1 camaro was a much longer job
.....PS I would never in a million years spend 12 bucks a plug for a nitrous plug....Just my opinion................Joe
Re: is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
many thanks again, one last question
the iridium plugs, because their tips are so dang small, would they be more prone to becomming a hot spot for detonnation, requiring me to go 2 steps colder rather than one?
just looked at the local parts store's website, and the tr6ix has a 2 year warranty versus the normal tr6's 3 month
not saying i go by the warranty or anything, just they make it out to last that long. so obviously they last longer. and at 7 bucks each, they are about the same price as the stock ACdelco platinums

Re: is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
Running nitrous changes everything with the way plugs are advertised to last......the high heat and exotic plug materials sometimes don't mix very well......the iridiums are supposed to be alright on juice but I really wouldn't bother....there's nothing I like less than being a guinea pig.been there on quite a few things with engines.no thanks
.........Im confident in the 103's , and I bet if your mixture is dialed in well(never too lean) you'll be fine for a long time.....but I would check any nitrous engines plugs more often than a NA motors plugs

Re: is there a longer lasting 1 step colder plug?
true, i am running mine one jet too rich right now, and that might be fouling them out faster than normal. I also have some timing put in also, so i figured i would fun that one jet richer on fuel to compensate/add a measure of safety to the extra timing. i'm working on another computer tune right now, but i need to do some datalogging runs to see where i stand with the timing and such.
i guess i'm looking at the 103's now. and changing them every 6 months or so depending on how many bottles i go through...just a lazy college student looking to get out of some real work lol
